Real Madrid did their utmost to retain La Liga's lead as Marcelo struck in the 86th minute against Valencia and ensured maximum points for his side after Dani Parejo cancelled out Cristiano Ronaldo's opener.
Ronaldo's goal also saw him become the all-time leading goalscorer across Europe's six major leagues, making it a fitting outcome that Los Merengues emerged with three points in tow:
Atletico Madrid were the most attractive winners of the day, however, after they soared to a 5-0 thrashing of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, where Kevin Gameiro's brace highlighted a prolific performance from Los Rojiblancos.
Relegated Granada scored their first goal under English manager Tony Adams but were still consigned to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Real Sociedad.

Recap
Suarez struggled in breaking down Espanyol during the first half of Saturday's derby clash, but patience proved key to victory after the Uruguayan notched twice in the second period to end a three-match scoreless run in the league.
The Barca frontman has had to wade his way through a rough patch in scoring form of late, and Suarez's brace saw his frightening goals record for the Blaugrana improved further, per Sky Sports Statto:
Real held up their half of the bargain in keeping pace with La Liga's title race and showed outstanding resolve to arise in the dying embers of their clash with Valencia and steal a 2-1 win.
Ronaldo's breakthrough in the 27th minute was the 367th career strike he needed to move ahead of Jimmy Greaves and become Europe's No. 1 scorer, per Eurosport UK:
The statistical accolades didn't end there for the Portuguese star, however, as BT Sport Score detailed how his opener at the Santiago Bernabeu saw him collect another milestone:
Real couldn't capitalise on their lead, however, and Parejo's curling free-kick equaliser in the 82nd minute was the inspiration they needed to unearth an even later winner thanks to Marcelo.
Cutting in off his left flank, the Brazilian talisman scythed on to his right foot before slotting his attempt inside the right post, improving his already imperious attacking record, per OptaJose:
Manager Zinedine Zidane's side may have produced the most drama, but it was rivals Atleti who turned on the flair as they pummelled Las Palmas 5-0, with Saul Niguez, Thomas Partey and Fernando Torres joining Gameiro on the scoresheet.
A quick blitz in attack saw the visitors go 3-0 up inside 18 minutes, and Gameiro illustrated his proficiency after converting two of those, per Squawka:
Partey and Torres' second-half strikes sealed three points after Kevin-Prince Boateng saw red for a second bookable offence as Atleti secured third place as their own, three points free of Sevilla in fourth.
Juanmi also bagged a late winner for Real Sociedad in their meeting with Granada in Basque country, and Adrian Ramos' maiden goal for Adams' Granada wasn't enough to stop La Real building on Carlos Vela's opener.
