Athletic Bilbao edged within two points of La Liga's top six after defeating Celta Vigo 2-1 on Monday evening, when Aritz Aduriz and Mikel San Jose scored in the final 10 minutes to pull off a last-gasp comeback.

Striker Iago Aspas slotted Celta into a 1-0 lead early in the second half after hitting the woodwork twice in the opening period, but Facundo Roncaglia's 80th-minute red card provided a turning point for the hosts.

After a shaky first half, Los Leones roared back with ferocity to give the home crowd something to cheer about, bounding into La Liga's upper echelons as a result of their fifth successive home win.

Recap

Athletic and Celta laid on a festive fixture to remember despite its lack of goals on Monday as the pair engaged in an evenly balanced tug-of-war at San Mames, where the hosts persevered to take all the points on offer.

A back-and-forth first half ended with the two teams level at the break, but after hitting the post and the bar, Aspas finally got his breakthrough on 54 minutes to keep him among La Liga's top finishers, per Spanish football writer Alexandra Jonson:

Theo Bongonda flashed a cross into the middle of the box just before the hour mark, and Aspas did as he has all season by converting past Athletic goalkeeper Arrizabalaga to send Celta into a slim lead.

However, after dominating portions of the opening 45 minutes, Los Leones were determined to make their way back into the league clash as broadcaster Deji Kofi Faremi highlighted their renewed vigour:

A win over the hosts would have brought Celta their first victory at San Mames since 2006, but Roncaglia's error in defence meant Athletic were handed a late route back into the meeting.

His foul in the area gave Aduriz the opportunity he needed to level from the 12-yard spot, and the Spain international kindly obliged to improve his already handsome-looking record against Celta Vigo, per La Liga:

That 82nd-minute lifeline proved to be more than that, too, when San Jose volleyed home an Inaki Williams pass in the second minute of injury time to devastate their visitors.

Celta manager Eduardo Berizzo substituted off Aspas and Bongonda after Roncaglia's red card in an effort to stop Athletic's comeback, but his efforts proved futile as Valverde's men completed a revival to remember.
