La Liga Results 2016: Scores and Updated Table After Saturday's Week 16 Matches

James DudkoDec 17, 2016

Sevilla moved above Barcelona into second place in La Liga after thrashing Malaga 4-1 at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium on Saturday. The hosts put on a superb display of attacking football to reaffirm their credentials as a genuine, if unlikely, player in this season's title race.

Seville are now just four points behind leaders Real Madrid and two above Barca, having played a game more than both. Sunday's Catalan derby against Espanyol at Camp Nou is Barcelona's game in hand.

Elsewhere, Villarreal stayed fourth in La Liga after a 3-1 away win over Sporting Gijon. The Yellow Submarine continued their impressive league form, but also saw Real Sociedad, rivals for fourth place, win.

Sevilla earned their 10th win of the season in thrilling fashion, after scoring four times in the first half. The home side produced some wonderful attacking football.

Sevilla pressed high and made rapid transitions from defence to attack. When they won the ball, manager Jorge Sampaoli's players were tidy, stylish and efficient in possession. They moved through the lines with quick and intelligent one- and two-touch passing.

Those traits helped create a brace for striker Luciano Vietto, something he's now making habit of in front of the home crowd, according to OptaJose:

Wissam Ben Yedder added a third after another typically slick, swift and incisive move, before Vitolo made it four with still 10 minutes to go to half-time. Spanish football writer Colin Millar felt the breathtaking scoring salvo personified Sampoali's bold philosophy at its best:

Not even a red card for centre-back Adil Rami after the hour mark could ruin Sevilla's day, although Sandro Ramirez did pull one back for Malaga from the resulting free-kick.

Sevilla will find it tough to stay with Barca and Real all season, but there is plenty of creative talent in this squad. Sampaoli has them playing a game few teams can cope with when everything clicks.

While Sevilla were convincing, Atleti were anything but during their narrow home win over Las Palmas. The home side lacked pace in their play and ingenuity in attacking areas.

Ultimately, it took a long-range shot from midfielder Saul Niguez to give Atletico all three points. Sluggish performances like this one have doomed Atleti in the title race.

Real Sociedad weren't sluggish in Granada. The visitors passed the ball with efficiency and authority from the start, but didn't take the lead until just shy of the hour mark.

Jon Bautista got the goal, before Juanmi added a second to seal an impressive win for Sociedad against increasingly relegation-threatened Granada.

Sociedad's win was the perfect response to Villarreal also collecting three points away from home. Goals from Jonathan dos Santos and Nicola Sansone gave the Yellow Submarine a two-goal lead before 20 minutes had passed.

Alexandre Pato sealed the points with 16 minutes to go, but there was still time for Sporting to get a consolation goal, courtesy of Carlos Carmona's bizarre header.

Villarreal and Sociedad are having an engaging scrap for fourth place. Yellow Submarine manager Fran Escriba deserves immense credit for getting his squad focused following Marcelino's surprise resignation just prior to the start of the season.

However, the real credit belongs to a Sevilla side proving it has what it takes to mix it with the division's big boys.
