Tottenham vs. CSKA Moscow: Score and Reaction from 2016 Champions League Match

Gianni VerschuerenDec 7, 2016

Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to beat CSKA Moscow 3-1 during Wednesday's UEFA Champions League action, booking a spot in the UEFA Europa League in the process.

Alan Dzagoev gave the visitors a shock lead against the run of play, but Dele Alli and Harry Kane turned the situation around before half-time.

After the break, goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev gifted Spurs a two-goal lead with an own goal, and that was enough for the hosts to see the match out at Wembley Stadium.

As Spurs' official Twitter account shared, Toby Alderweireld was fit to take a spot on the bench, while Harry Winks made another start:

The two teams entered the match with a ticket to the Europa League on the line, with Bayer Leverkusen and AS Monaco already assured of the top two spots in Group E.

The match started at a positive pace, with Spurs looking to push up the pitch early. Alli should have opened the score after just six minutes, missing a header from close range after a good cross from Christian Eriksen.

Akinfeev made his first stop of the match after 11 minutes, denying Heung-Min Son after a well-worked attack from the hosts.

OptaJoe noted the Russian stopper has struggled in Europe:

Akinfeev started the contest well, however, producing another fine save to stop Eriksen from scoring. Spurs kept pushing forward, mustering chance after chance, but the hosts struggled with their finishing, as Kane fired wide from a promising position.

Alli made himself unpopular with the visitors, first refusing to kick the ball out of play as Aleksei Berezutski stayed down with an injury before taking out Zoran Tosic with a late slide. Somehow, the 20-year-old wasn't booked.

Tosic and Alli kept clashing, and the latter seemed distracted when another fantastic chance fell his way. Eriksen isolated the England international with a great pass, but instead of picking a corner, Alli fired his shot straight at Akinfeev.

Per Jack Pitt-Brooke of The Independent, Spurs' finishing was below par:

And as is often the case, their wastefulness was punished in the 33rd minute, when Tosic did a fine job of holding off Jan Vertonghen and playing in Dzagoev, who turned CSKA's first chance of the night into the opening goal.

Per ESPN FC's Dan Kilpatrick, a lot of things went wrong for Tottenham during the sequence that led to the goal:

However, the setback appeared to be what Spurs needed. With time winding down in the first half, Alli finally converted one of his many chances after Eriksen created another great opening. And while Hugo Lloris had to make a great save on Georgi Milanov, Kane completed the comeback before the break, tapping in an assist from Danny Rose.

Per Sky Sports Statto, it was about time that Spurs found the net with some consistency in Europe:

CSKA introduced Fedor Chalov at half-time in a desperate attempt to secure a Europa League ticket, but Spurs maintained control of the ball and began to search for a third goal.

Eriksen stole the headlines with more brilliance in midfield, finding open team-mates left and right; while it didn't lead to any immediate chances, it kept the Russians away from the Tottenham goal.

Berezutski was booked for denying Alli a great opportunity through on goal, but Kane's resulting free-kick barely troubled Akinfeev. Over on the sidelines, Alderweireld started warming up, and to the delight of the Wembley crowd, he got some minutes from manager Mauricio Pochettino, as the team's Twitter account shared:

Alli tried his luck with a sliced effort from distance, missing the target by quite a margin. And on the other side of the pitch, Kyle Walker made a great block to deny Chalov.

Akinfeev kept his team's hopes alive with a reflex save on Kane after 75 minutes, but minutes later, the Russian goalkeeper clumsily worked a header from Alli over his own line.

Alderweireld nearly celebrated his return with a goal, as his header didn't miss the crossbar by much, and the action died down after that, allowing Spurs to pass away the time.

Per the club's official Twitter account, Alli thought it was an important result with an eye on what's to come:

Tottenham's next outing will be at Old Trafford against Manchester United on Sunday, while CSKA host rivals Zenit Saint Petersburg on March 4, when the Russian Premier League resumes after its winter break.
