Saturday Recap

Chelsea put together a championship performance to edge Spurs. More specifically, the Blues didn't play their best match and almost let the game slip away early, but they fought back and found a way a win. That's how titles are won.

On the flip side, it was an encouraging performance despite the loss for Tottenham. They won the possession battle, created more shots and played an all-around strong match away from home. But in the end, there's only so much value in moral victories for top clubs.

Paul Brown of the Daily Star summed up Chelsea's statement win:

Manchester City showcased impressive composure after falling behind Burnley inside the first 15 minutes. The title contenders didn't become overly aggressive, instead remaining patient on the ball en route to holding possession for 66.7 percent of the match.

The measured approach paid off as Sergio Aguero found the net twice, once in each half, to secure three more hard-fought points for the Sky Blues. The result moved their away record to 6-0-1, which is always an advantage, especially when the title race is shaping up to become an extended battle.

Afterward, Caroline Oatway of City's official website passed along comments from manager Pep Guardiola about the comeback and next week's marquee fixture:

"

Some faults are our own fault. I also need time to understand the referees. We are so satisfied for the points and the performance, especially three days after the Champions League.

All of the players showed huge character and a lot of personality—and after going 1-0 down at a stadium where only Chelsea are better at home. We are so happy. We have a long week to rest a little and prepare for Chelsea.

"

While City were forced to grind out their victory over Burnley, neither Swansea or Crystal Palace showed nearly as much defensive resistance in a nine-goal thriller.

It was actually a pretty normal match until the hour mark, with a 1-1 score at that point, and then all hell broke loose. Leroy Fer scored twice in a three-minute span to cause an explosion of offense that didn't end until Fernando Llorente netted a stoppage-time brace to steal the win for Swansea.

Defending like that in display in the final 30 minutes will likely give both managers nightmares, but it created a memorable finish for Swans supporters and casual observers alike.

Squawka Football spotlighted the madness:

Things were far more routine for Liverpool. The Reds played perhaps their most comprehensive match of the league campaign, dominating possession at a 77.5 percent clip and generating 27 shots, as Sunderland spent most of the battle hemmed in their own defensive third.

The goals didn't come until late, though. Divock Origi and James Milner both scored inside the final 15 minutes to ensure Liverpool's strong outing didn't result in a single point. A draw would have been extremely frustrating based on the way the game played out.

All told, Sachin Nakrani of the Guardian discussed the versatility the Reds have shown so far:

In the day's other matches, Islam Slimani converted a penalty in the 94th minute to salvage a draw for Champions League-focused Leicester against a gamely Middlesbrough. And Hull and West Brom played to a 1-1 draw that was a fair result for both sides.

Looking ahead, Arsenal have a chance to keep their place among the muddled top of the table with a home victory over Bournemouth on Sunday. The Gunners have been forced to accept draws in three of their past four league games. More of those must turn into three points moving forward.

Manchester United is the other potential contender in action Sunday. The Red Devils can't be counted out following a mundane start, but they need to start making their move up the table soon to remain a threat since there are five clubs ahead of them all playing pretty good football at the moment.
