James DudkoNov 19, 2016

Real Madrid extended their lead at the top of La Liga after thrashing Atletico Madrid 3-0 in the derby at the Vicente Calderon on Saturday. Cristiano Ronaldo's hat-trick has put Los Blancos four points clear at the top after bitter rivals Barcelona were held to a goalless draw by Malaga at the Camp Nou earlier in the day.

Atleti are now nine points off the pace in fifth. Earlier results also went against Atletico, especially Sevilla coming from behind to beat Deportivo La Coruna 3-2 at the EstadioĀ Riazor.

Sevilla stay third, six points adrift of Real, but just two behind Barca.

Recap

Real were without centre-backs Sergio Ramos and Pepe, as well as holding midfielder Casemiro. Yet Los Blancos still put on a clinic for how to win a big game away from home.

Ronaldo and fellow forward Gareth Bale were superb throughout. In particular, the former's clever movement gave a usually stubborn Atleti defence fits.

Ronaldo had a great chance early on, but Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak produced this magnificent save, per Sky Sports Statto:

A deflected free-kick eventually helped Ronaldo give Real the lead. The goal marked a new low for Atletico during manager Diego Simeone's tenure, according to OptaJose:

Los Merengues controlled the game because of the way they bossed midfield. Without Casemiro, brawn was never going to be Real's best way of winning the battles in the middle.

Instead, Los Blancos kept the ball superbly. Their playmakers rotated positions at will and recycled possession in a stylish and efficient way.

One ball-hogging schemer in particular stood out:

Real were content to sit off and strike on the break in the second half. The plan looked like working when Ronaldo won a penalty.Ā He went down in a challenge with defender Stefan Savic, before coolly sending Oblak the wrong way.

Real had squandered several promising counters but got it right in style when Bale broke at pace to tee up Ronaldo for his hat-trick.

It was a decisive and history-making goal for Ronaldo, according to ESPN's Dermot Corrigan:

Meanwhile, Atletico set some unwanted marks after this collapse:

Barca should have gone top and put a mountain of pressure on Real. However, their inability to cope without strikers Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez was exposed by a determined Malaga side.

The visitors benefited from a superb display by goalkeeper Carlos Kameni. He's frustrated the Blaugrana in the past, and was their nemesis again, per LaLiga:

Too often Barca failed to click in the final third. The passing from midfield areas wasn't quick enough, while Neymar struggled to carry the load up top.

In the end, Malaga preserved the clean sheet despite having two players sent off in the second half. It's not often Barca are held goalless at home, per Sky Sports Statto:

Sevilla just won't go away in this title race. The plucky side challenging the dominance of Spain's big two showed some true mettle by overcoming a 2-0 deficit to beat Depor.

Sevilla trailed after Ryan Babel and Florin Andone both scored. Holding midfielder Steven N'Zonzi got the comeback started though, by netting on the stroke of half-time.

The rugged and destructive Frenchman is one of many players playing a more progressive game on manager Jorge Sampaoli's watch. His team moved the ball intuitively after the break, always creating rapid combinations between triangles of players.

Still, the visitors had to wait until the 87th minute to finally get back on equal terms. The equaliser came courtesy of winger Vitolo, who was outstanding on the day.

Then it was up toĀ Gabriel Mercado to slot in the winner in stoppage time. The defender's right-foot shot went low into the corner amid a melee in the box.

Sevilla have been playing some wonderful stuff under Sampaoli. This is a side littered with dazzling maestros such as Ganso and Franco Vazquez.

Yet this win showed a different side to Sevilla. Namely, the resilient and resourceful side. Finding ways to rally from adversity and still win is a priceless trait to have.

Malaga weren't the only team to have two players sent off this week. Celta Vigo suffered the same fate at theĀ Estadio Municipal de Ipurua.

Celta's reduced ranks hadn't been able to find an answer to Granada loanee Fran Rico Castro's early opener for Eibar, who are now an impressive seventh.

But the most impressive result and performance of the day fittingly belonged to the leaders. Real were superb at the Calderon, playing smart football defensively and passing the ball neatly and perceptively going forward.

Ronaldo chose the perfect moment to have his best game this season, while a makeshift defence was hardly troubled.

As for Atleti, serious doubts have been raised about their ability to realistically challenge for this season's title. By contrast, Barcelona will stay in the race but can't afford many more hiccups given the form Los Blancos are in.
