Manchester United vs. Arsenal: Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger React to EPL Match

Gianni VerschuerenNov 19, 2016

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho thought it was clear his team deserved more from their 1-1 draw against Arsenal during Saturday's Premier League action, while Arsene Wenger acknowledged his side wasn't good enough at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils put together a fine outing but ran into a late equaliser from Olivier Giroud, and as expected, Mourinho was disappointed with the result, per United's official Twitter account:

Juan Mata had given the hosts the lead after 68 minutes, and by then, the Red Devils could have scored several goals already. They had also been denied what appeared to be a clear penalty before half-time, with Antonio Valencia going to the ground after a clash with Nacho Monreal.

The win seemed in the bag with minutes left to play, but Giroud decided otherwise, netting a late equaliser.

The result leaves United in sixth place, and as shared by ESPN FC's Miguel Delaney, Mourinho took the time to make some excuses for his club's mediocre start to the season:

He praised his players, who put together a fine performance both with and without the ball. United harassed Arsenal's vaunted midfield throughout the afternoon, recovering possession in a hurry and disrupting the Gunners' timing.

Per Delaney, Mourinho liked what he saw:

He also couldn't help but take one final shot at Arsenal and Wenger, per John Cross of the Daily Mirror:

Wenger didn't sugarcoat his team's performance in his post-match press conference, although he hailed their resilience at the end of the contest, per Arsenal's official Twitter account:

The Frenchman was asked about the controversial non-call on the first-half penalty, and he thought the official made the right decision, per Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News:

He also praised his team's defensive work on an afternoon where they had to be on point:

Arsenal now sit fourth in the standings, just two points off the top, but Wenger won't be happy with the team's form coming out of the international break. More is expected from the Gunners, and they'll have the chance to bounce back when they take on Paris Saint-Germain during Wednesday's UEFA Champions League action.

United will host Feyenoord in the UEFA Europa League one day later.
