2016 Premier League 2: Monday's U23 Scores, Latest Tables and Updated Fixtures

Tom SunderlandOct 31, 2016

Everton's under-23 side failed to move to the top of the Premier League 2 after drawing 1-1 with Chelsea on Monday evening, where a share of the spoils was only enough to take them within one point of Division 1 leaders Manchester City.

Derby County moved off the bottom of the table in Division 1's other Monday fixture, upsetting Southampton with a 2-0 victory at the iPro Stadium, thanks to strikes from Andreas Weimann and Timi Max Elsnik.

Elsewhere, Swansea City edged 10-man Stoke City 2-1, meaning Wolves' last-gasp 4-3 win over Fulham was only enough to ensure they remained two points behind the Division 2 leaders.

Recap

Derby staged a surprise at home to fourth-placed Southampton on Monday and yanked themselves into 11th after earning their second win of the season, not to mention their first clean sheet of the new term.

Goals from Weimann and Elsnik helped steer the Rams to a rare triumph over tough opposition, and it was the latter of the scoring pair who gave his side the more attractive of the two strikes:

Second-placed Everton were worthy of their point following a 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea, with Harry Charsley playing the hosts' hero after Dujon Sterling thrust the west Londoners into a fifth-minute lead.

The visiting outfit have now drawn three Premier League 2 matches in succession and sit seventh in Division 1, although there were other positives for first-team manager Antonio Conte:

In Division 2, Swansea retained a two-point lead at the summit after defeating Stoke City 2-1, but Wolves remain tight on their heels thanks to a 4-3 beating of mid-table Fulham in the west Midlands.

Oliver McBurnie and Alex Samuel netted either side of a Tahvon Campbell equaliser to keep the Welsh outfit atop Division 2, although Liam Edwards' second-half sending off certainly helped matters.

Bright Enobakhare, Will Randall and Sylvain Deslandes all jumped on the host's scoresheet before the break, bagging three in the space of 12 minutes to put their side in a commanding lead at the interval.

Dennis Adeniran got Fulham on the board before Stephen Humphreys scored a nine-minute brace, but equilibrium between the two sides was short-lived after Enobakhare responded just a minute later. Wolves described the tug-of-war that unfolded in the closing stages:

Just below the top two, West Ham United leapfrogged West Brom into third spot with a 2-1 win over the Baggies at Chigwell Construction Stadium, with the difference coming from Ashley Fletcher and a Jack Fitzwater own goal.

Jonathan Calleri—on loan at the London Stadium from Deportivo Maldonado—impressed with the under-23s, so much so that fan account West Ham Central tipped the striker for a chance in the first team:

The mid-table jostle for comfort heated up all the more, after Aston Villa submitted Blackburn Rovers to a 4-0 defeat, pushing the Birmingham club up to fifth in the standings with a big boost in goal difference.

Gabriel Agbonlahor made an appearance for the under-23s and assisted first-half goals for Aaron Tshibola and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy, 18, with the club's Twitter account happy to celebrate their veteran's fine display:

Hepburn-Murphy grabbed a second after the restart, before Andre Green bagged a fourth, a result Villa can consider a big message of intent to the rest of the division.

Newcastle United collected a northeast derby victory over Middlesbrough after beating the Teessiders 2-0, where Ben El Mhanni followed up an opening strike from Sean Longstaff to sew up the three-point haul.

Longstaff's campaign has gone from stride to stride, per the Chronicle's Lee Ryder, and his strike helped lift the Magpies up to sixth in the standings and up to mid-table status:

Brighton and Norwich City ran to a 1-1 draw in what was the only draw of the evening, where Elvis Manu nudged the Seagulls ahead, before Sergi Tenes pulled back a valuable equaliser for the Canaries.

A draw wasn't enough to lift the Norfolk club off the bottom of the table, but it at least pulled Norwich back into the points after losing 1-0 to Wolves last time out.
