La Liga Table 2016 Week 10: Standings and Final Scores After Sunday

Tom SunderlandOct 30, 2016

La Liga saved its best for last on Sunday after Las Palmas battled back from three goals down to snatch a 3-3 draw against the 10 men of Celta Vigo, who had Sergi Gomez sent off in the second half of their meeting.

Villarreal missed their chance to climb up to third in La Liga on Sunday after goals from Ivan Ramis and Pedro Leon saw Eibar collect a valuable comeback victory against the Yellow Submarine.

Manager Fran Escriba saw his side edge to a 1-0 lead after Bruno converted a 40th-minute penalty, but two goals in the final 10 minutes led Eibar to a dramatic win some might argue was deserved.

Elsewhere, Athletic Bilbao also spurned their opportunity to ascend into La Liga's upper echelon after stuttering to a 1-1 draw at home to Osasuna, where Raul Garcia cancelled out Oriol Riera's opener.

Espanyol then capitalised on Real Betis' wasteful display and left Seville with a 1-0 victory, clinching their third clean sheet in four matches and extending their unbeaten run to four games.

Read on for a breakdown of Sunday's La Liga results, complete with a look to the latest standings and a recap of the day's action.

Recap

Celta had victory within their grasp after steaming to a 3-0 lead early on in their trip to Las Palmas on Sunday evening, but the hosts showed the mettle that's seen them dazzle this season to steal a share of the spoils.

Daniel Wass scored the opener in Gran Canaria after just eight minutes before Iago Aspas kept up his prolific run of form, as OptaJose mentions, by contributing goals in the 14th and 21st minutes to assert Celta's 3-0 lead:

Las Palmas manager Quique Setien must have held an almighty team talk at the break, because his side then burst to life in the second half, with Pedro Bigas scoring to get back on track just seven minutes after the restart.

Gomez was then adjudged to have fouled his opponent in the box, and after Jonathan Viera drilled in the resulting penalty, Kevin-Prince Boateng netted the precious equaliser. Squawka Football detailed their return from certain doom:

Victory in Eibar could have seen Villarreal climb level on points with second-placed Barcelona on Sunday, but the hosts had other plans in mind as they pulled off a late revival that pushed them back into La Liga's upper echelon.

Two goals in the last 10 minutes from centre-back Ramis and star attacker Leon secured all three points for the home side and brought an end to the Yellow Submarine's considerable unbeaten record, as OptaJose showed:

Villarreal still sit three points clear of their nearest challenger in fifth place, but this was the kind of fixture that they needed to hold on to if Escriba's men are to have any dreams of challenging for a higher finish this term.

Eibar were only too happy to gloat about their comeback win on social media, too, taking to Twitter to pat their own back after the result:

Athletic Bilbao were similarly disappointed to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Osasuna, who bagged the opener in the 23rd minute through Riera, only for Garcia to equalise five minutes later on the hosts' behalf.

It took Osasuna eight weeks of the 2016-17 campaign to snatch their first victory of the season, and with just one loss in their last four, the 19th-placed team are starting to develop a head of steam, per La Liga:

Diego Reyes scored the only goal of the game in Sevilla, where Betis slumped to a 1-0 defeat at Espanyol's hands just days after the away team stunned Barcelona by the same scoreline to win the Catalonia Super Cup.

Reyes—a centre-back on loan from FC Porto—headed home in the 62nd minute to give Espanyol the breakthrough they needed to go four games unbeaten and rise up to 12th in Spain's top flight.
