But the visitors hit back before the half-hour mark, Sabin Merino pouncing to level the scores at 1-1.

Real pushed for a winner in the second half but were left frustrated by Athletic's resolute defence, until Alvaro Morata stepped up to bundle home, restoring the home side's lead with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Zinedine Zidane's side held on to claim the 2-1 win and leapfrog four clubs to the top of La Liga.
