Barclays Premier League Table: 2016 EPL Outlook After Saturday's Week 9 Results

Adam WellsOct 22, 2016

Tottenham Hotspur's quest to move atop the Premier League standings was thwarted on Saturday with a 0-0 draw against Bournemouth, though Spurs did extend their unbeaten streak in all competitions to eight.

Neither team was able to get extensive shots on their opponent, with just five combined efforts on goal, but Tottenham dominated the possession 62-38 percent.

Bournemouth missed a golden opportunity to take an early lead at home when Charlie Daniels got deep into Tottenham territory and looked like he was going to find the back of the net, but Hugo Lloris made a fantastic diving stop.

Saturday Recap

Spurs will look back on Saturday's match as a missed opportunity. They were the dominant team, trying to force the pressure on Bournemouth and hoping to catch the Cherries off guard for one moment.

Yet the absence of Harry Kane continues to loom large for Tottenham, as they are lacking an offensive identity. With just 13 goals in nine EPL games after today's draw, Spurs are flirting with disaster.

Dele Alli had a chance to put Tottenham on top right out of the gate when Bournemouth 'keeper Artur Boruc botched a pass that Alli scooped up, but the England international was flagged for offside.

Greg Stobart of Squawka summed up Tottenham's overall offensive effort against Bournemouth:

Fortunately, the defense remains an impenetrable wall, but next week's match against reigning Premier League champions Leicester City will be another stern examination of their title credentials.

Mistakes were plentiful on both sides as Spurs and the Cherries combined for 25 fouls, with six yellow cards issued.

Despite the draw, the news is hardly bad for Tottenham, as Mauricio Pochettino's men reached a historic benchmark, per OptaJoe:

For Bournemouth, a point against the EPL's only unbeaten team has to feel like a victory, especially after Junior Stanislas was unable to play due to a calf injury and Andrew Surman was removed from the starting lineup due to an illness

With all that working against Bournemouth, a draw isn't a bad result. It's also another reason Tottenham should be frustrated by the final score.

Arsenal's draw followed a similar pattern to Tottenham's. The Gunners dominated possession, holding the ball 75 percent of the time, yet they only managed to get one more shot on goal than Middlesbrough.

Mohamed Elneny had an early opportunity for Arsenal, but his shot flew wide of the net.

Middlesbrough didn't have many chances, but the few that the north-east side created nearly caught out the Gunners. Petr Cech had to make two quick saves on back-to-back attempts from Adama Traore and Alvaro Negredo.

NBC Sports Soccer provided the highlights of Cech's terrific play and subsequent reaction from an appreciative crowd at Emirates Stadium:

There was a brief moment late in the match when the Gunners appeared to take a lead thanks to Mesut Ozil, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Per ESPN's Miguel Delaney, Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka was happy with his team's effort on Saturday:

Despite the draw, Arsenal still moved one point ahead of Manchester City and Tottenham for the EPL's top spot. City have the chance to take over the lead with three points if they can defeat Southampton on Sunday.

In one of Saturday's surprise defeats, Everton failed to take advantage of stumbles by teams ahead of them in the standings by slipping to a 2-1 defeat against Burnley.

This one looked like it was going to be another stalemate before Scott Arfield put a rebounded shot past Maarten Stekelenburg in the 90th minute to give Burnley a much-needed win after losses in the last two EPL games.

Here's Arfield's game-winner, courtesy of NBC Sports Soccer:

Stekelenburg is enduring the roller-coaster ride that 'keepers always go through. One week ago, he was a hero for Everton with two saves on penalty kicks to preserve a 1-1 draw against Manchester City.

Royal Blue Mersey has not been particularly enamored with Everton's play during what appeared to be a simpler part of the EPL schedule:

It's particularly distressing because Everton are still floating around the top of the standings, but dropping points like this is going to make their climb steeper.

While Saturday's results were defined largely by the volume of draws, there was no shortage of drama from the EPL. There hasn't been a total shakeup in the standings to this point, though the top teams like Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal have put themselves in position to separate from the pack in the coming weeks.
