USA vs. Switzerland Women's Soccer: Score and Twitter Reaction for 2016 Friendly
While United States presidential candidates duked it out during the third debate on Wednesday night, the U.S. women's soccer team used a second-half explosion to soundly defeat Switzerland 4-0 in an international friendly from Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.
After being held scoreless in the first half, the United States racked up all four of its goals in the final 45 minutes of the match.
This was a different-looking squad that head coach Jill Ellis rolled out on Wednesday. With a new cycle being implemented ahead of World Cup 2019 qualifying, 11 players who never made an appearance for the U.S. national team were included on the roster.
Two of those players were in the starting lineup in the form of Stanford junior midfielder Andi Sullivan and Casey Short, another midfielder who had to overcome three separate ACL tears to finally make her debut at 26.
While the United States might have grown accustomed to fast starts in these international friendlies, Switzerland was proving to be no pushover.
The 15th-ranked team in the world's organized defense was impenetrable despite the United States bossing almost 70 percent of possession through the first 45 minutes.
Switzerland was also outshot 7-2 in that first half.
FourFourTwo USA though saw it as just a matter of time before the United States got on the board:
Another debutante, who was substituted at halftime, wasted no time before putting the United States in front when striker Lynn Williams scored with her first touch of her international career.
Sent in all alone, Williams just had the keeper to beat, which she did with a low, right-footed shot that put her in elite company, via U.S. Soccer WNT:
Meg Linehan of Excelle Sports was hyped for the 23-year-old:
Williams' NWSL team, the Western New York Flash, wasn't too surprised:
Tobin Heath made it 2-0 in the 61st minute, taking a feed from Crystal Dunn and calmly rolling a low shot past Gaelle Thalmann.
Eight minutes later, Christen Press made it three when a methodical buildup down the right side allowed Kelley O'Hara to enter the box and feed the scorer, who was alone in front of a gaping Swiss goal.
Howler liked what it saw:
Another substitute made an immediate impact in the 76th minute, when Sam Mewis' powerful header put the United States up 4-0. It was her first touch of the game off a cross by Press, who played provider instead of scorer.
These two teams aren't done with each other, as Sunday will provide a rematch from Minneapolis, Minnesota.
While it might have been just a friendly, the United States getting goals from all corners of the roster is a promising sight for Ellis and Co. moving forward. With an aging core that has already seen the departure of Heather O'Reilly this year, contributions from secondary stars could be vital come World Cup qualifying.
