Liverpool vs. Manchester United: Jurgen Klopp, Jose Mourinho React to EPL Match
Manager Jose Mourinho defended the defensive tactics Manchester United used to frustrate Liverpool and earn a 0-0 draw at Anfield in the Premier League on Monday.
The Red Devils boss called on critics to round on Liverpool for failing to score against his stubborn outfit, even suggesting goalkeeper David De Gea was "on holiday," per Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News.
After United strangled the life out of a game that featured few chances for both sides, Mourinho said things went just the way he planned, per Squawka News:
Despite the miserly approach based more on what the Red Devils did off the ball than on it, Mourinho felt his team controlled the proceedings, according to the Premier League's official Twitter account:
Mourinho put the onus on Liverpool for failing to break his stingy and structured team down despite possessing the ball for most of the match, per Andy Kelly of the Liverpool Echo:
He poured more salt on the wounds by stating De Gea had little to do on Monday, according to Luckhurst:
A typically defiant Mourinho also couldn't resist a sly dig at his rivals and the high regard in which their open, attacking football has been held, per Kelly:
By contrast, Mourinho's counterpart Jurgen Klopp was so disappointed by his side's failure to score that he felt the need to apologise, per Kelly:
Klopp bemoaned De Gea's fine form after the Spain international denied Emre Can and Philippe Coutinho with a pair of superb saves in the second half.
They were rare chances for the hosts, but Klopp revealed he's used to seeing De Gea frustrate the Anfield faithful, per Luckhurst:
Klopp acknowledged his side did little with the lion's share of the possession they enjoyed, per Kelly:
Ultimately, he couldn't take much consolation from the clean sheet that earned Liverpool a point and kept them within two of leaders Manchester City, per Squawka News:
It's understandable Klopp was the more downbeat of the two managers. After all, his team had the chance to go to the top of the table but couldn't, despite being the only side trying to win the match.
Meanwhile, Mourinho's tactics weren't pretty, but seventh-placed United gladly accepted a point from one of their toughest fixtures, even if the stalemate did little for their title hopes.
