EPL Table: 2016 Week 8 Standings After Sunday's Premier League Scores

Tom SunderlandOct 16, 2016

A 3-1 win over Burnley was enough to see Southampton move up to eighth in the Premier League on Sunday, while Watford worked their way to a hard-fought 1-0 victory in their trip to face Middlesbrough.

Saints hosted the Clarets in Week 8 knowing a win would be enough to take them back into the Premier League's top half, and Charlie Austin delivered with a brace against manager Sean Dyche's side.

Nathan Redmond also got on the scoresheet with his second goal of the season, but Sam Vokes' late penalty proved to be little more than a consolation for Burnley.

Earlier in the day, Jose Holebas bagged a sensational long-range winner at the Riverside Stadium in what was an otherwise drab performance between two teams lacking in offensive quality.

Southampton 3-1 Burnley

The summer departure of Ronald Koeman to Everton threatened to have an inhibiting impact at St. Mary's Stadium, but manager Claude Puel is proving himself to be a tactical dynamo of his own after Sunday's 3-1 win over Burnley.

Austin revelled in starting against his former club and bundled home the opener after 52 minutes before converting a penalty 14 minutes later, and Match of the Day noted the forward is never short of drama against Burnley:

Redmond added Southampton's second strike after some sloppy Burnley defending left the former Norwich man free of his marker from a corner, condemning Dyche's men to a fifth loss in their last seven outings.

The only negative point for Southampton was seeing their recent clean-sheet record come to an end, as pointed out by OptaJoe, leaking a goal for the first time since their September loss to Arsenal:

Puel's Southampton now sit just three points below Koeman's Everton, and the Saints have four days to prepare before they face Inter Milan in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening.

Burnley may sit in 14th place, but the promoted outfit are only a point above the relegation zone as things stand and could do with a sustained string of results in order to stave off any fears of a drop.

Middlesbrough 0-1 Watford

Watford became just the second away team to register a win in Week 8 after their close-run victory over Middlesbrough, where Hornets hero Holebas succeeded in converting just one of his side's two shots on target.

Those at the Riverside will have been disappointed by the quality of football on display, but Holebas' 20-yard screamer won the clash in the 54th minute, and it wasn't his first long-range finish of the season, per Squawka:

According to WhoScored.com, Watford had just four shots at goal, while just three of Boro's total 10 attempts managed to test Hornets goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, albeit with no end product.

Even with another three points to their name, however, Watford's players found reason to bicker among themselves at the full-time whistle, as shown by Sky Football:

As a result of their Sunday triumph, manager Walter Mazzarri's men are now up to 10th in the table, while Middlesbrough remain sat in 17th, only higher than 18th-placed Stoke City by virtue of goal difference.

Eight games into his Premier League career, and Mazzarri appears to be finding his feet in England, having won three times in his last five matches and only suffering defeat in one of those outings.
