Abby Wambach Criticises USMNT's Use of Players with Dual Citizenship
Former U.S. women's national soccer team star Abby Wambach has once again criticised the men's team's use of players with dual citizenship, questioning their "killer instinct" and saying she'd like to talk to them about their love for their country.ย
As Fox Sports' Caitlin Murrayย reported, Wambach made headlines last year for questioning manager Jurgen Klinsmann's reliance on foreign-born players, and several of the men's players had issues with her comments.
Her opinion hasn't changed since, as she told Sam Borden of the New York Times (h/t Murray):

"Itโs just my opinion, and Iโm entitled to that.ย It feels a little bit odd to me that you have some guys that have never lived in the United States that play for the United States because they were able to secure a passport. To me, that just feels like they werenโt able to make it for their country and earn a living, so theyโre coming here.
But do they have that killer instinct? I donโt know. Iโd love to sit down with Mix Diskerud and some of these other guys and talk to them about it. Iโd love to understand how much they love their country. I believe they can have love for both countries, but Iโd love to hear it, and I think so many other people would, too. If this is an ignorant opinion, Iโll raise my hand in the end and say, 'My bad.โ But Iโd want to have that conversation.
"
As expected, her latest comments reignited the discussion on social media. Maxi Rodriguez wasn't a fan:
Klinsmann, a former Germany international who has coached the men's team since 2011, hasn't been shy of using foreign-born, and particularly German-born, players in recent years.ย
Jermaine Jones, Terrence Boyd, Aron Johannssonย and Mix Diskerud have all played major roles for the team, and all of them largely grew up outside of the United States. Darlington Nagbe and Gedion Zelalem are part of the new generation expected to lead the team into a bright future.
Wambach is the USWNT all-time top scorer and a two-time Olympic gold medalist.
