Steven Gerrard is one of a collection of former Premier League stars who will take part in a six-a-side tournament in London next summer.
As reported by ESPN FC, the competition—which will be called Star Sixes—will feature the legendary former Liverpool skipper as well as Robert Pires and Jay-Jay Okocha. Also in attendance will be the likes of Michael Ballack, Deco and Carles Puyol.
The event will take place at the O2 Arena in the capital and will be played between July 13 and July 16. There will be 12 competing teams from Brazil, Spain, Germany, Mexico, Italy, France, England, Portugal, Australia, Nigeria, Netherlands and China.
Both Pires and Deco used social media to express their excitement at taking part in the event:
According to the report, while the inaugural edition will take place in London, there are plans to expand the Star Sixes, with Berlin, Istanbul, Beijing, Sydney, Miami and Seattle noted as potential host cities in the future.
Matches in the competition are set to be 30 minutes long, with a group stage and knockout format.
“There's no big tournament next year, so it's a chance for fans to get behind their national teams and the quality will be high,” said Jonathan Rogers, the managing director for organiser Pitch International, per Mitch Phillips of Reuters. “We need about 120 players and they are all fully capped internationals. We have a number signed up and are very close to a number of others.”
Gerrard, now 36 and playing for Los Angeles Galaxy, will be keen to test himself against some former foes.
