Golden Shoe 2016-17: Top Goalscorers in Europe, Updated Points on October 3
Gonzalo Higuain's move to Juventus has in no way dampened his proficiency in front of goal, as proved by his double in Serie A as the Old Lady beat Empoli 3-0 on Sunday.
As a result, the former Napoli man moved to six league goals for the 2016-17 campaign, a record currently matched by Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann, Chelsea's Diego Costa and Inter Milan's Mauro Icardi.
Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani has netted eight times in seven Ligue 1 appearances so far this term after scoring both goals in the defending champions' 2-0 defeat of Bordeaux on Saturday.
Europe's major leagues are still in the early stages of the season so the top five in the race for the Golden Shoe is currently made up of relatively unfamiliar names, with BATE Borisov's Vitali Rodionov leading the way.
Here's a look at the current standings in the race to be Europe's top goalscorer, along with a closer look at how the big names got their goals over the weekend:
| 1 | Vitali Rodionov | BATE Borisov | 13 x 1.5 | 19.5 |
| T2 | Christian Gytkjaer | Rosenborg | 18 x 1.0 | 18.0 |
| T2 | Gerard Gohou | Kairat | 18 x 1.0 | 18.0 |
| T4 | Evgeni Kabaev | Sillamae Kalev | 17 x 1.0 | 17.0 |
| T4 | Vjatseslav Zahovaiko | Paide | 17 x 1.0 | 17.0 |
| Selected Others | ||||
| Gonzalo Higuain | Juventus | 6 x 2.0 | 12.0 | |
| Antonie Griezmann | Atletico Madrid | 6 x 2.0 | 12.0 | |
| Diego Costa | Chelsea | 6 x 2.0 | 12.0 | |
| Mauro Icardi | Inter Milan | 6 x 2.0 | 12.0 | |
| Edinson Cavani | Paris Saint-Germain | 8 x 1.5 | 12.0 |
Rules: To calculate a player's points tally, their goals are multiplied by a difficulty factor based upon which league they're scored in.
For example, in the Premier League or Serie A, goals are worth two points, while in Ligue 1, goals are multiplied by 1.5. For the likes of Gytkjaer, Gohou, Kabaev or Zahovaiko, their leagues have a difficulty constant of one, so their goals and points tallies are the same.
Higuain has now netted three times in Juve's last three league matches as the Serie A champions have scored seven goals without reply to move four points clear at the top of the table.
The Argentinian's first against Empoli—to make it 2-0—was a left-footed drive from the edge of the box which finished off a brilliant flowing move by Juve in the 67th minute.
Three minutes later he put the ball in the back of the net again after taking advantage of Marco Zambelli's mistake.
| Club | Season | Appearances (as a sub) | Goals | Minutes per goal |
| Juventus | 2016-17 | 4(3) | 6 | 66 |
| Napoli | 2015-16 | 35 | 36 | 82.7 |
| Napoli | 2014-15 | 31(6) | 18 | 154.6 |
| Napoli | 2013-14 | 28(4) | 17 | 142.5 |
Having broken a 66-year-old Serie A record last season with his tally of 36 goals at Napoli, Higuain is on course for a similar return in 2016-17 having netted six times in 396 minutes of action, per WhoScored.com.
Costa could do nothing to prevent Chelsea losing 3-0 to Arsenal last time out in the Premier League, but he was back on the scoresheet again as the Blues beat Hull City 2-0 on Saturday.
After setting up Willian's opener just after the hour, the Spain international netted Chelsea's second six minutes later, firing a fine finish into the top corner.
Per Squawka, following a poor campaign in 2015-16, Costa looks very much back to his best, a potentially key factor for Chelsea as they look to compete for the Premier League title again under manager Antonio Conte:
Griezmann also moved to six league goals for the season over the weekend as he scored Atletico's opener in their 2-0 defeat of Valencia.
The Frenchman could have had a brace, but he was denied from the penalty spot by Diego Alves in the first half, with the Valencia goalkeeper continuing his stunning spot-kick record, per football writer Alexandra Jonson:
Griezmann made amends just after the hour, though, as he was set up by Kevin Gameiro, and Atleti moved top of La Liga as they continued their unbeaten record in 2016-17.
