La Liga Table 2016 Week 7: Updated Standings Following Friday's Result

Christopher SimpsonSep 30, 2016

Real Sociedad moved up to ninth in La Liga on Friday as they edged out a poor Real Betis side 1-0 at the Estadio Anoeta.

Carlos Vela scored the decisive goal for the hosts as they deservedly ran out winners. Betis struggled to offer an attacking threat for much of the contest, while Sociedad could have scored more if not for an excellent performance from goalkeeper Antonio Adan.

Here are the latest standings following the result:

Recap

The hosts dominated the ball in the first halfaccording to Eurosport, they had two-thirds of the possession—but failed to make the most of it.

La Real did forge two excellent opportunities, both of which fell to Willian Jose, but on both occasions, Adan produced outstanding reaction saves to deny his headed efforts on goal.

Many of Sociedad's other first-half efforts were either blocked or speculative efforts from outside the area, as demonstrated by OptaJose:

At the other end, Los Verdiblancos almost scored against the run of play toward the end of the half when Alex Alegria spun and fired a smart volley on goal from outside the area, but Geronimo Rulli tipped his strike around the post well as he dived low to his right.

The forward and the goalkeeper impressed Betis blogger Ben Hardman:

Sociedad eventually took the lead in the 63rd minute, when Vela evaded the static Cristiano Piccini to turn home Mikel Oyarzabal's cross at the far post to net his second goal of the season.

The hosts celebrated the goal, which comes too late to earn him a place in Mexico's squad for the upcoming international break, per ESPN FC's Cesar Hernandez:

Betis offered little in response, allowing Sociedad to see out the game comfortably. Adan once again helped keep the score down in the final minute of normal time, when he rushed out to stop Oyarzabal after he'd been sent through on the right.

La Liga's title contenders are all in action on Sunday as Atletico Madrid travel to Valencia, Barcelona visit Celta Vigo and Real Madrid host Eibar.
