La Liga Results 2016: Scores and Updated Table After Saturday's Week 6 Matches

James DudkoSep 24, 2016

Real Madrid now lead La Liga by just a point after being held to a draw for a second time in as many matches. A late Las Palmas equaliser denied Los Blancos all three points after a 2-2 draw in Gran Canaria on Saturday.

Real's misery was compounded by the knowledge second-placed Barcelona had closed the gap earlier in the day. Barca put five past Sporting Gijon even without injured attacking talisman Lionel Messi.

Elsewhere, Athletic Bilbao saw off Sevilla 3-1 at San Mames, after Eibar won a Basque derby against Real Sociedad.

Recap

Sergio Araujo was the hero for Las Palmas after his strike inside the final five minutes snatched two points from the leaders. Marco Asensio and substitute Karim Benzema had given Los Merengues the lead with goals either side of a smart finish from Tana for the hosts.

The controversy came from manager Zinedine Zidane's decision to substitute prolific forward Cristiano Ronaldo with the result still in doubt. Yet, as Squawka noted, Real's usually free-scoring No. 7 hadn't been experiencing his best night in front of goal:

Zidane defended the substitution, noting how he has one eye on the club's upcoming UEFA Champions League duty, according to ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan:

Still, the stalemate will cast greater attention on Zidane's decision to haul Ronaldo off when one more goal would have made sure of the win. Instead, this latest stalemate, Los Blancos' second in a row after drawing 1-1 at home to Villarreal, marked the end of Real's recent success on their travels, according to Sky Sports Statto:

Anytime Zidane's men drop points, the criticism will be stronger if it comes on a day when Barca claimed all three. The defending champions did just that after three goals in the last 10 minutes made certain of things in Gijon and helped them rebound from the recent 1-1 home draw with Atletico Madrid.

Neymar scored twice, proving this team can cope without Messi. Arda Turan and Rafinha also got in on the act, as the strength of manager Luis Enrique's squad was again obvious.

But Corrigan felt the real credit belonged to the right-back:

Replacing Dani Alves would be a daunting task for any player, but 24-year-old Sergi Roberto hasn't been awed by the challenge. His rapid progress is another reminder of Barca's willingness to rely on their youth academy—a practice demanding both patience and bravery.

Both qualities are being amply rewarded by Roberto's form so far this season.

Another Barca player dominating at this early stage is striker Luis Suarez. He scored the first in Gijon, a goal that has made Suarez the most prolific marksman in the division, per La Liga:

With Suarez and Neymar on form, Barca should continue to pile up the points even in Messi's absence. That's a scary thought for the rest of Spain's top flight.

In Bilbao, it was a landmark day for prolific 35-year-old target man Aritz Aduriz, according to Sky Sports Statto:

He celebrated in style after tucking away a penalty in the 90th minute. The spot-kick was awarded after a terrible gaffe from Sevilla's on-loan goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu.

Mikel San Jose had opened the scoring for Bilbao, before another loanee, Manchester City's Samir Nasri, equalised for the away side 10 minutes into the second half. A fine strike from Mikel Balenziaga put Bilbao back in front.

Another defeat on their travels heralded an unwanted mark for Sevilla, per OptaJose:

Athletic are now up to the heady heights of third. Their stellar home form can make the Basque club a strong contender to finish well in the European places by season's end.

It's something Eibar can also dream of after they moved up to sixth. Asier Illarramendi was guilty of an own goal for Sociedad, before former Manchester United flop Bebe sealed the points six minutes after the hour-mark.

Eibar have enjoyed a splendid start to the season, despite seeing last season's top scorer Borja Baston sold to Premier League side Swansea City by parent club Atletico Madrid in the summer.

Manager Jose Luis Mendilibar's squad is proving its strength in depth by collecting 10 points this early.

Eibar are part of a clutch of teams who are giving the table a different look after the familiar top two.
