La Liga Table 2016: Thursday's Week 5 Results and Updated Standings

Gianni VerschuerenSep 22, 2016

Valencia finally grabbed their first points of the 2016-17 La Liga season on Thursday, as Daniel Parejo converted a late penalty to give Los Che a 2-1 win over Alaves in Week 5.

The result takes Valencia up to 18th place and might spark a much-needed run after a dreadful start to the season for the fallen giants.

Leganes and Espanyol both grabbed vital 2-1 wins in the battle against relegation, beating Deportivo La Coruna and Osasuna, respectively. Here's a look at Thursday's results:

Valencia fans had to wait five weeks for their team's luck to finally turn, as interim manager Voro finally delivered Los Che their first points of the season against Alaves.

As shared by AS English, Valencia got some help from defender Victor Laguardia, who scored an unlikely own goal by heading the ball over his own goalkeeper:

Los Che couldn't celebrate their lead for long, as Gaizka Toquero equalised for the visitors before half-time.

Things looked grim for Valencia once again, with Alaves showing their defensive might throughout the second half, holding firm until the 88th minute. Marcos Llorente fouled substitute Zakaria Bakkali inside the box, and Parejo converted the penalty to give his team their first points of the season.

Deportivo have struggled tremendously since the sale of star forward Lucas Perez to Arsenal, and Thursday's home fixture against newly promoted Leganes didn't bring a change in fortunes, as the Galicians wasted a one-goal advantage in the second half.

Celso Borges gave the hosts the lead in the first half, and his scoring numbers compared to those of Perez highlight just how much production the club has been forced to replace, per OptaJose:

Deportivo's attack finally showed up after a woeful start to the season, but poor luck and crucial mistakes in front of goal meant the hosts never increased their advantage. They paid for those mistakes in cash when Luciano Neves and Gabriel Appelt Pires gave Leganes the lead in the span of six minutes and held on for the win.

Per David Cartlidge of BeIN Sports USA, the former Juventus man has played a big role in Leganes' solid showings early in La Liga:

Espanyol grabbed a much-needed first win of the season at Osasuna, with Gerardo Moreno finding a late winner after Sergio Leon had erased an early advantage courtesy of the in-form Leo Baptistao.

With the win, the Catalans pushed themselves out of the relegation zone, and perhaps Espanyol can go on a run to improve their spot in the standings now they've gotten that first victory out of the way.
