Recap

Ivan Rakitic and Angel Correa took care of the scoring in Wednesday's top clash, with Barcelona and Atletico playing out a 1-1 draw.

The hosts, Barcelona, had a slight advantage in the first half and took the lead shortly before half-time, as Rakitic was left wide open on a great cross from Andres Iniesta.

As shared by Sport's Rik Sharma, the Croat has a penchant for scoring big goals:

Atletico hit back after the break, however, as substitute Correa completely turned Javier Mascherano inside out before producing a fine finish to tie things up.

Lionel Messi had left the pitch with a knock, and his creativity in the attacking third was clearly missed, as the Catalans were powerless to grab the lead once again. The result means Real Madrid maintain their two-point lead in the standings.

Villarreal held Real to a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu, ending Los Blancos' perfect La Liga run and their bid to make history. The Yellow Submarine came out with the perfect tactical setup, frustrating the hosts throughout the first half with a compact defence.

The in-form visitors even took the lead through Bruno Soriano, who converted a penalty with a Panenka move after Sergio Ramos was caught handling the ball inside the box.

The Real defender stole the spotlight on Wednesday, tying things up early in the second half and claiming a late penalty after he had moved up to play as an emergency striker. The official didn't budge, however, and Villarreal held firm.

As shared by ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan, Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane was obviously asked about the top clash in Catalonia later on Wednesday:

Over in San Sebastian, Real Sociedad cruised to a surprise win against Las Palmas, who started the season well but lost Kevin-Prince Boateng to an early red card on Wednesday and never recovered.

Spanish football writer Sid Lowe was shocked when he checked the score after 22 minutes:

Willian Jose bagged a brace, while Carlos Vela and David Zurutuza also found the net for the hosts, with Tana scoring a late goal for Las Palmas.

Raul Garcia scored a screamer in Athletic's 2-1 win over Granada, where star defender Aymeric Laporte found a winner in the 77th minute. Celta Vigo also managed a win, and the Galicians now sit two points above the relegation zone.
