LaLiga Table 2016 Week 5: Updated Standings Following Tuesday's Results

Tom SunderlandSep 20, 2016

A 1-0 victory over Real Betis was enough to temporarily push Sevilla up to second place in LaLiga on Tuesday evening, with manager Jorge Sampaoli's side now just a point behind leaders Real Madrid entering Week 5.

The home side clinched victory in the Seville derby for the fourth time in succession at the Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan, where Gabriel Mercado picked a prime occasion to net his first goal for the club.

Earlier on Tuesday, Malaga came back from a goal down to defeat Eibar 2-1 at the Rosaleda thanks to goals from Sandro Ramirez and Youssef En-Nesyri either side of half-time.

That result brought the Anchovies their first win of the 2016-17 campaign, while Eibar missed out on the opportunity to move into the top three, suffering their second defeat of the league season.

Malaga 2-1 Eibar

Malaga's first win of the season was by no means an easy feat, but manager Juande Ramos' side showed great character to come back from a goal down in front of their home fans to finally get their season started.

Nano's short-range header put the visitors ahead in the lead after 42 minutes, but Sandro's clever manoeuvre ensured the hosts were level heading in at the break, per Spanish newspaper AS:

The 21-year-old wasn't the only youngster to score for Ramos' men, though, and En-Nesyri broke Spanish records after Ignacio Camacho set him up for the match-winner with 15 minutes remaining, per OptaJose:

After two successive losses in LaLiga, Tuesday's win was the morale-boosting spin Malaga needed to get their season back on track, and a win lifted them up to 12th in the standings.

Eibar can afford to feel disappointed with the manner in which their defeat came about, and they could now finish the week outside LaLiga's top half depending on the remainder of the Week 5 results.

Sevilla 1-0 Real Betis

A tense derby meeting between Sevilla and Real Betis ended with Sampaoli's side extending their unbeaten start to the season on Tuesday night, all thanks to Mercado's sole strike on goal.

On-loan Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri laid the free-kick on a plate for defender Mercado, and LaLiga's official Twitter account outlined there's no better way to enamour one's self with their new fans:

Sevilla enjoyed their own share of let-offs, however, and Yahoo's Andrew Gaffney highlighted one occasion where the visitors could only rue the linesman's decision:

Sevilla now sit two points ahead of Barcelona, who travel to face Sporting Gijon on Wednesday evening, but Sampaoli will savour the progress his side are making for the time being.

Betis, meanwhile, will seek a quick turnaround after suffering just their second defeat in five matches, surrendering all three points for the first time since opening day, remaining stuck in 13th for the time being.
