Barclays Premier League Table: 2016 EPL Outlook After Friday's Week 5 Result

Rob BlanchetteSep 16, 2016

Liverpool shocked Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Friday, as the Anfield giants flexed their muscle on their travels to the capital.

Dejan Lovren gave the Reds a precious lead in west London, and Jordan Henderson doubled the advantage for manager Jurgen Klopp's team with a blockbuster strike that found the top corner.

Chelsea fought back in the second half as Diego Costa's goalscoring streak continued, but the Blues could not find the equaliser they believed they deserved.

Manchester City lead the way after dismantling Manchester United 2-1 last week with style and panache at Old Trafford.

The Sky Blues welcome Bournemouth to the Etihad Stadium in their next challenge, but the Cherries will have to produce an unbelievable display to halt Pep Guardiola's men.

Sergio Aguero completes his domestic ban after his heroics in the UEFA Champions League, but Guardiola proved he is not completely reliant on the striker's talents after his team's fluid display at the Theatre of Dreams.

United hope to refocus their efforts after back to back defeats in all competitions, but a trip to Watford threatens Jose Mourinho's opening gambit as manager.

Paul Pogba has failed to settle quickly after his world-record move back to the north-west from Juventus, and he has cut a frustrated figure in the middle.

The Mail Online questioned if the Octopus will live up to the hype:

Wayne Rooney is expected to return to the first team after United's disappointing European trip to the Netherlands.

The captain was rested for the UEFA Europa League fixture, but the Red Devils lacked bite in the final third.

Anthony Martial's form remains sketchy after a poor start to the campaign, leaving Mourinho scratching his head at his options.

Arsenal have the chance to burst into the top four of the league if they defeat Hull City, as they head north towards the Humber.

The Gunners survived against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, rescuing a point in a 1-1 match after an Alexis Sanchez strike and a poor display.

Arsene Wenger's unit once again appear lacklustre across the park, leading to questions being asked of the veteran manager's tactics and selection.

Journalist and Arsenal fan Piers Morgan remained critical of his club before the weekend matches:

Despite the season being in its infancy, both United and Arsenal currently appear off the standards City has set at the summit.

Mourinho is yet to find his best formation at United, and his players looked lost against City and a poor Feyenoord side.

Arsenal's issues have not changed over many seasons, and Wenger's summer purchasing has once again lacked inspiration, devoid of world-class incomings.

If either side want to battle City for the title, they will need to find form that sets them apart from Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur as they all chase the promised land of the Champions League.
