2016 Barclays Premier League 2: Friday U23 Results, Latest Rankings and Schedule

James DudkoSep 9, 2016

Manchester United held local rivals Manchester City to a 1-1 draw in the Premier League 2 U23 derby at the Etihad Stadium on Friday. Matty Willock scored a superb opener for the Reds, before substitute Brahim Diaz fired back with a stunning set-piece strike for City after the break.

Earlier, Chelsea thumped London rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge. The Blues came out on top 3-1 thanks to goals from Jay Dasilva, Isaac Christie-Davies and Fikayo Tomori. Spurs gained some consolation when Shayon Harrison stroked home a penalty deep into stoppage time.

It was a comfortable win despite a superb performance from Tottenham goalkeeper Tom Glover.

Meanwhile, Spurs' north London rivals Arsenal outclassed Derby County in a 3-1 win away from home. A Chuba Akpom double added to an early Chris Willock finish.

Not even a Charles Vernam penalty could give Derby much pride after Arsenal dragged them all over the pitch with a quality, pass-and-move display.

Here are the results from Friday's fixtures:

The Manchester Evening News' Simon Bajkowski confirmed both teams for the Manchester derby:

It was Rodney Kongolo who threatened early for the hosts. The 18-year-old midfielder twice went close after mix-ups in the United back four.

Unfortunately for City, Kongolo's shooting radar was a little off. He blazed over when he really should have scored.

City would soon rue the miss when the young Red Devils took an early lead after Matt Willock finished smartly.

The goal was harsh on City, who had been bossing the ball. In particular, Kongolo and forward Paolo Fernandes were combining well to play quick, intuitive one- and two-touch football in the final third.

Despite their lead, United's defence was looking overworked at the break. Axel Tuanzebe was trying to cover as best he could, but the away side needed to get to grips with the City midfield.

The Citizens had to wait until just after the hour mark to get their equaliser. It came courtesy of an exquisite free-kick from Diaz, who had replaced Fernandes.

United's response was to introduce teenage attacker DJ Buffonge for his U23 debut. But the change couldn't alter the score.

Alex Porter of the Manchester Evening News summed up what was largely disappointing fare from both sides:

Spurs' official site revealed manager Ugo Ehiogu's team selection:

Tottenham looked strong, but it was Chelsea who pressed early and created the chances. Mason Mount and Dasilva ran the visitors' defence ragged early, consistently calling Glover into action, per Chelsea's official site:

Glover was the hero when he superbly denied Christie-Davies with an ultra-athletic stop. Spurs' official site showed some of the action from the Bridge:

Glover was needed shortly after the break, when substitute Ike Ugbo fired a fierce shot toward the top corner. But Spurs couldn't keep relying on their goalkeeper and hope to survive.

Glover was finally beaten when Dasilva scored from the spot after Christian Maghoma brought down Josimar Quintero with a clumsy challenge. Two moments later, Glover parried Kyle Scott's shot, only for Christie-Davies to score with a close-range header.

A curler from Ugbo nearly claimed Chelsea's third, only for the busy Glover to pull off yet another save. The Blues weren't kept waiting long for another goal, though.

It came from a nifty piece of skill from Mount, whose back-heel pass found Tomori, who slammed a shot across Glover to find the net.

The result put Chelsea in second—ample reward for such an assured display, even if leaders Everton still have a game in hand.

Arsenal fielded a strong team in Derby, featuring many players who have been near the Gunners first team. Defender Krystian Bielik, schemer Gedion Zelalem, attacking midfielder Chris Willock and striker Akpom all started.

It was Willock who bagged Arsenal's first after he dragged a low shot into the bottom corner. His well-placed finish was followed by a second from Akpom.

The Gunners were moving the ball at pace, intelligently exploiting gaps between lines and releasing free runners. Derby's official site shared some snaps from the match:

Akpom scored again barely 10 minutes into the second half when he rounded off a slick break with another neat finish.

It should have been plain sailing from there, but Alex Babos won the young Rams a penalty with just under 20 minutes remaining. Vernam duly converted the spot-kick.

The day's only Division Two game saw West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers draw, 2-2. Christian Herc and Morgan Gibbs-White scored for Wolves, while Antonio Martinez found the net for the Hammers, who also got an own goal.

Both teams are still in sight of leaders Swansea City.
