Euro 2016 Results: Scores, Highlights and Reaction After Sunday's Last-16 Games

James DudkoJun 26, 2016

Eden Hazard finally announced himself at UEFA Euro 2016 after scoring one and providing another in a magnificent display to help Belgium beat Hungary, 4-0, in the last 16 in Toulouse, France, on Sunday.

He raised the game of everyone around him, with Toby Alderweireld and substitutes Michy Batshuayi and Yannick Carrasco also finding the net.

Wales will now have to hope the mercurial Hazard is not in this sort of form when the two meet in the quarter-final on Friday.

Germany joined hosts Belgium and hosts France in the quarter-finals after thrashing Slovakia, 3-0, at the last-16 stage in Lille, thanks to goals from Jerome Boateng, Mario Gomez and star man Julian Draxler.

The FIFA World Cup holders were in ominous form as they tore through Slovakia with quick, slick and inventive football. It was a performance that sent out a warning to both Spain and Italy, who are set to meet the Germans in the last eight after playing in Paris on Monday.

France once again sealed Republic of Ireland's major international tournament fate after winning, 2-1, in their last-16 match in Lyon on Sunday. An Antoine Griezmann brace for the hosts in the second half cancelled out Robbie Brady's second-minute penalty.

Ireland struggled to respond to going behind, especially after defender Shane Duffy was sent off for a lunge on Griezmann. France await the winner of England's match with Iceland on Monday.

Recap

Hazard looked keen right from the start, tormenting Hungary with his signature brand of scuttling speed and impish trickery. The Chelsea winger's motivation and command were clear to BBC Radio 5 live Sport pundit Trevor Sinclair:

But Hazard wasn't the only Belgium player turning on the style during a classy first-half display. Centre-forward Romelu Lukaku was also doing his bit, according to BBC's Match of the Day:

Meanwhile, Gracenote Live explained how Manchester City attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne wasn't shy about taking on a shot:

He set the pattern for Belgium's bold policy in front of goal, a policy summed up by these numbers from OptaFranz and Match of the Day:

Yet all they had to show for all those shots was Alderweireld's emphatic header from a De Bruyne corner after 10 minutes.

But all the shots on goal were bringing out the best from 40-year-old Hungary goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly. UEFA Euro 2016 relayed an image of this spectacular save from a De Bruyne free-kick:

His acrobatics prompted Ladbrokes to have some fun with how long Kiraly has been tending goal, long enough to have even frustrated Belgium's current manager:

De Bruyne didn't let up exposing defensive gaps and reached a milestone for creativity after the break:

His double act with Hazard was keeping Hungary on the back foot, per the tournament's official Twitter:

Their expert interchanges earned praise from B/R's Sam Tighe, who felt the omission of one player had helped liberate Belgium:

Hazard merited the praise when his low cross gave Batshuayi a tap in late on. The silky No. 10 had run on to collect his own pass in a dazzling exhibition of skill and pace on the wing.

It was a move and pass that's made Hazard the most prolific creator of goals at the tournament, according to OptaJose:

He conjured another moment of magic a minute later when he glided past a trio of confused defenders before thrashing in his nation's third. Bleacher Report UK hailed a long-overdue international goal from Belgium's most gifted player:

Carrasco added some gloss to the scoreline in stoppage time against a dispirited Hungary side.

Belgium finally showed their class because they finally put the game on the shoulders of their talented attackers.

Earlier, Draxler ran the show for Germany from the left wing, teeing up Gomez for the second just before half-time, after a breathtaking change of pace and stunning close control from the flank. Another Gomez goal has put the target man level with his country's most prolific player in this competition, per OptaJohan:

Centre-back Boateng had opened the scoring with barely eight minutes on the clock, after his terrifically struck half volley took a deflection.

Buoyed by the fast start, Germany proceeded to pass the ball with assurance and purpose between the lines.

Draxler was a frequent outlet and always tormented Slovakia out wide. He got his reward just after the hour mark when he hooked in the third.

UEFA Euro 2016 relayed an image of the acrobatic finish:

Not even Mesut Ozil having a penalty saved could dampen Germany's day.

Instead, BBC Radio 5 live Sport took a moment to salute the nation's astonishing run of success under manager Joachim Low:

That run could be snapped in what's sure to be a tougher test in the quarter-final. The idea of Spain's technical quality meeting such a stylish German team is a mouthwatering one for footballing purists.

Germany may even prefer to see the Spanish, rather than Italy, who've given them problems in the past, notably knocking them out of Euro 2012 at the semi-final stage.

Paul Pogba's clumsy challenge on the lively Shane Long in the box gifted Ireland the opener against France with less than two minutes on the clock. Brady stepped up and converted off the inside of the post.

The tournament's official Twitter put the rapid-fire goal in context in the history of the competition:

France tried to rally, but the match didn't turn until manager Didier Deschamps wisely withdrew holding midfielder N'Golo Kante in favour of jet-heeled winger Kingsley Coman. His introduction meant the French adopted a more proactive 4-2-4 with Griezmann and Olivier Giroud flanked by the substitute and Dimitri Payet while Pogba and Blaise Matuidi sat in the middle.

The more progressive shape naturally led to more expansive football from the French, attacking play that soon led to Griezmann's decisive brace. He netted the first after rising to emphatically meet a nicely whipped cross from right-back Bacary Sagna.

OptaJean detailed how effective the Atletico Madrid forward has been in the air at this tournament:

Giroud's clever knockdown gave Griezmann the chance to slot home the second with a low shot.

As ITV Football noted, it didn't take Griezmann long to take the game away from Ireland:

MisterChip showed Griezmann's swift brace wasn't the first France have benefited from in the European Championships:

By reaching three goals, Griezmann has matched a France legend at the Euros, per OptaJean:

His latest efforts also put Griezmann into some select company, according to Gracenote Live:

Playing closer to Giroud in central areas gave Griezmann greater licence to make runs in behind. His perceptive movement forced Duffy into a reckless challenge five minutes after France had taken the lead, resulting in a straight red card.

His dismissal reduced Ireland's attacking impetus during the final 25 minutes. In fact, Griezmann had several chances to make the margin of victory more comfortable for France.

France's only down note is that Kante and centre-back Adil Rami, both booked, are suspended for the quarter-final stage. B/R's Jonathan Johnson is worried the latter's absence will leave the hosts with a soft central defence:

The back four does look suspect, but France's match-winners are all in forward areas. Deschamps was right to hand them the initiative with an attacking shape. Next time, he shouldn't wait until France are trailing before becoming more proactive.
