EPL Table: 2015 Top Scorers, Standings After Week 19 Premier League Scores

James DudkoDec 29, 2015

Arsenal kept hold of the top spot in the Premier League at the end of the calendar year after Leicester City and Manchester City could only produce a 0-0 draw at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday.

The goalless stalemate also meant Leicester's Jamie Vardy missed the chance to reclaim the outright lead at the top of the league's scoring charts. Instead, the Foxes front man must continue to share the top spot with Everton hotshot Romelu Lukaku.

There was plenty more prolific attacking talent on display in the east Midlands. But even the likes of free-scoring Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez and City's talisman striker, Sergio Aguero, failed to shine.

Jamie Vardy, 15 Goals

Vardy's best chance came in the first half. He benefited from a calamitous mix-up between City's blundering central defenders, Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi.

The latter's pass was intercepted and the ball threaded through for Vardy. But with a clean run at goal, the 28-year-old contrived to sky his shot over the bar.

James Robson of the Manchester Evening News decided to to poke fun at the miss:

In fairness to Vardy, he spent most of the match as a lonely figure. The home side sat deep, particularly during the first-half exchanges.

This not only meant Vardy had little support. He also lacked the accurate supply to release his electric pace. James Sharpe of the Leicester Mercury felt Vardy was too cut off from his teammates:

City also denied Vardy's fellow attacker, Mahrez, many chances. The raiding runs of City left-back Aleksandar Kolarov eventually pegged back the winger.

This was a rare off day for both of Leicester's main stars. It has to concern manager Claudio Ranieri that Vardy, Mahrez and Co. have failed to find the net in each of their last two matches.

Sergio Aguero, 7 Goals

Speaking of concerned, City boss Manuel Pellegrini must still be worried that Aguero remains far off the pace. Blighted by injuries all season, the Argentinian live wire wasn't much of a threat to the Foxes defence.

In fact, a less-than-sharp Aguero spurned arguably the game's best chance. He bundled the ball over after fine combination passing between full-back Bacary Sagna and attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne appeared to tee him up in the box.

Squawka carried a shot of the costly miss:

Pellegrini eventually substituted Aguero for towering Ivory Coast striker Wilfried Bony just after the hour mark. It's been a tough slog back to playing for Aguero. But he still needs to be patient.

A full fit Aguero can transform City's title challenge. But the brittle 27-year-old can't risk any more damaging setbacks.

Maybe the biggest lesson from this game is that if these are two of the top contenders, the title race really is wide open this season. Both City and the Foxes can stay in the thick of it if they can get their strikers firing again.

That means getting Vardy back among the goals for Leicester. For Pellegrini, Aguero's fitness will be key.
