Marco Reus Contract: Borussia Dortmund Star Agrees to New Deal

Tom SunderlandFeb 9, 2015

Marco Reus likely won't be exiting from Signal Iduna Park this summer after Borussia Dortmund announced the star signed a new deal with the club through 2019.

On Monday, German radio stations first reported Reus was close to penning new terms with the Black and Yellows, per Eurosport.com.

As Ben Jefferson of the Daily Express mentioned, the likes of Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Arsenal were among those interested in the attacker, but must now be left disappointed after the announcement of the contract extension.

The report quoted Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke as saying, "We have put all our cards on the table. The ball is now in Marco's court." Evidently, Reus was willing to play ball.

However, the new contract could merely be a means for Dortmund to get a higher sum upon his departure, with the 25-year-old's current deal containing a clause which would see his release fee reduced to just £25 million this summer.

Bundesliga writer Clark Whitney sees no point in such a plot, however, attesting that it would merely limit the player in getting a move away at the end of this season:

Reus' original deal was set to expire in 2017, and with a host of Europe's titans floating around his services, Jurgen Klopp's side must be encouraged their man appears to be staying for the long term.
