
Twitter Reveals Premier League's Most Talked-About Stars, Teams, Moments of 2014
Manchester United might have had a chastening 2014, but on Twitter, they were still the kings of conversation and the most mentioned club of the calendar year.
Twitter data shows that the eventual removal of David Moyes, the hiring of Louis van Gaal and those expensive summer signings put them atop of one table at least—the Premier League of mentions.
Arsenal and Liverpool—both of whom have had their shares of ups and downs in 2014—occupy the next two places, with the altogether more stable Chelsea occupying the last "Champions League" spot.

But the summer was dominated by the World Cup, and accordingly, the top 10 Twitter talking points of the year (not just in sport) was dominated by the tournament.
Even in the UK, the biggest moment came on July 8 as Germany destroyed Brazil 7-1 in the semi-final. The moment set off Twitter conversations at an even more rapid rate than a homegrown story, when Wayne Rooney equalised for England against Uruguay.

Football dominates the list, with only New Year's celebration mentions and a triumph for One Direction at the Brit Awards gatecrashing the top 10:

As for the top talked-about Premier League players of 2014, is it really any shock that the list is headed by Luis Suarez, the man who lit up the top flight with Liverpool, then bit an opponent at the World Cup and then made a big-money move to Barcelona?
