Netherlands vs. Mexico: Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info and Preview

Mexico will be looking for revenge of sorts against the Netherlands when the two sides meet in an international friendly in Amsterdam. The Dutch broke El Tri hearts in the round-of-16 clash at the 2014 World Cup, as two last-gasp goals from the Oranje saw Louis van Gaal’s side emerge as 2-1 victors.

But you suspect both teams will be focusing intently on challenges to come and as such, the match at the Amsterdam Arena presents a fine chance to accrue some momentum. The Dutch, now managed by Guus Hiddink, are in desperate need of a positive result after their recent struggles in qualifying, while Mexico will be looking to blood some fresh faces with some critical games on the horizon.

Netherlands Desperate for Momentum Ahead of Vital Qualifier

Since Van Gaal steered the Netherlands to the semi-finals of the World Cup in Brazil, things have taken a downward turn for the Dutch. Such is his experience that Hiddink was a man that many expected to oversee a seamless passing of the torch, but the team have really struggled for form under his tutelage.

The most emphatic indication of this was their recent 2-0 defeat to Iceland, a result that leaves the Netherlands with two defeats from their opening three games and languishing in third place in their qualifying group. In a tricky group that contains an impressive Iceland team as well as Czech Republic and Turkey, it’s critical that Hiddink rediscovers the winning formula immediately.

Hiddink is under big pressure to turn things around for the Netherlands.

Indeed, the legendary boss has admitted that he’d have no qualms about leaving his post should his nation fail to beat Latvia in their next European Championships qualifier. “If we lose [against Latvia] I will quit as coach,” said the 68-year-old, per FIFA.com. “Would a draw be sufficient? I don’t think so.”

After some desperate performances, you’d imagine spots in this Dutch XI are currently up for grabs, and one young players in situ that could potentially inject some much needed impetus into the Oranje efforts is Memphis Depay. Here’s a look at why there is plenty of excitement surrounding the PSV winger:

While he’s a skilful wide man, the 20-year-old is far from a "YouTube player." Despite suffering injury early in the campaign, Depay has already found the back of the net on nine occasions this season, per WhoScored.com. He’s also a talent that’s well adept at creating chances, per OptaJohan:

He’ll be vying for a spot in the starting XI alongside illustrious names like Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie, and after coming off the bench to change the game against Mexico in the aforementioned World Cup meeting, Depay is a player El Tri will be wary of ahead of this friendly.

Mexico impressed plenty with their effervescent displays in Brazil and they were exceptionally unlucky not to progress to the quarter-finals of the tournament. And although they've won three and drawn one of their games since the World Cup, there hasn’t quite been the same panache about Miguel Herrera’s side that was so evident just a few months ago.

SAN SEBASTIAN, SPAIN - AUGUST 31: Carlos Vela Garrido of Real Sociedad celebrates after scoring his team's fourth goal during the La Liga match between Real Sociedad de Futbol and Real Madrid CF at Estadio Anoeta on August 31, 2014 in San Sebastian, Spai

But in a major boost for Mexico, Carlos Vela returns to the fold for the first time in three years. He looks in excellent form ahead of this one too, per Mexican football expert Tom Marshall:

The Mexico boss, who endeared himself to all with his unashamedly passionate antics on the sideline in South America, is building towards the Copa America and the Gold Cup next summer. After the nation endured a spell of massive instability prior to the summer showpiece, Herrera will be desperate to bring some much needed consistency to the setup.

Playing against the Dutch should inspire El Tri to up their game, and in addition to Vela, they have some young players that will be hungry to make an impression against top quality opposition. As such expect an open but even game against a stuttering Netherlands team, who may have one eye on that critical clash to come against Latvia.

Prediction: Netherlands 2-2 Mexico
