Winners and Losers from MLS Week 11: World Cup Snubs, New England and More

Joe TanseyMay 18, 2014

Welcome to our latest look at the biggest winners and losers from the last week of action in Major League Soccer.

In Week 11, plenty of individuals made some costly mistakes, while one debutant made an instant impact on his club's result.

Other winners and losers included teams and players who felt the effects of the ongoing World Cup camps for nations such as the United States and Honduras.

Continue reading for a look at the winners and losers from MLS Week 11.

Winners: World Cup Snubs

1 of 10

Being left off the World Cup rosters of England, Nigeria and the United States was the motivation that Jermain Defoe, Obafemi Martins and Eddie Johnson needed this weekend, as all three scored a goal.

Defoe scored the first of two Toronto goals in the 12th minute against New York, while Johnson netted his first strike of the season late in the game against Montreal.

Martins continued the trend later on Saturday night when he scored the lone goal in Seattle's 1-0 win over San Jose.

Loser: Erik Palmer-Brown

2 of 10

Due to Sporting Kansas City's depth problem at center back, 17-year-old Erik Palmer-Brown was called on to make his debut on Sunday.

Palmer-Brown, who became the youngest defender ever to start a league match, saw his day end in the 64th minute, but not because he was substituted off the pitch; it was due to his second yellow.

The young defender did experience some growing pains against Chicago, but manager Peter Vermes really had no choice except to start the heralded defender with four center backs missing out on the match for a plethora of reasons.

Winner: Jack Jewsbury

3 of 10

Jack Jewsbury had one heck of an eventful night during Portland's 3-3 draw with Columbus.

The left back recorded an assist and a goal-line clearance in the electric match at Providence Park that also saw Jewsbury become the all-time minutes leader in Portland's MLS history.

By playing the full 90 minutes on Saturday night, Jewsbury's total time on the pitch for the Timbers rose to 8,572 minutes.

Loser: Ray Gaddis

4 of 10

It is rough to single out just one player on the Philadelphia defense, but Ray Gaddis made it hard not to on Saturday night against New England.

Gaddis made mistakes on each of the first three goals scored by the Revolution in the 5-3 win by the visitors at PPL Park.

The right back looked like he ducked out of the way on the first goal scored by A.J. Soares, and then he stumbled to give Diego Fagundez a bit of space on the second strike.

To make matters worse, Gaddis slid in to try to deny Lee Nguyen of getting a shot on goal in the 49th minute, but instead Nguyen was able to cut in past the Union defender and score.

Loser: Jaime Penedo

5 of 10

LA Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo rarely makes mistakes, but against Houston, he made a crucial one that led to the lone Dynamo goal.

In the 61st minute, Penedo played his touch off a Dan Gargan throw too heavily, and his mistake resulted in a pass by Mark Sherrod that set up Giles Barnes to fire off the right post and in.

While blame can be placed on Gargan for the bad throw as well, Penedo has to do better regardless of the situation he was put in.

Winner: Everyone in the New England Attack

6 of 10

For the second consecutive week, the New England Revolution scored five goals in a game.

The five-goal outbursts against Seattle and Philadelphia marked the third time in league history that a team scored that amount in two straight games, per Peter Hirdt of the Elias Sports Bureau.

The other two teams to achieve the feat were the 1998 LA Galaxy and 2001 Miami Fusion.

Loser: Depth on the San Jose Roster

7 of 10

San Jose entered its match against Seattle with just 16 players on its matchday roster.

Among the notable absences from the regular lineup were Chris Wondolowski, Victor Bernardez, Clarence Goodson and Shea Salinas.

All four of those players are crucial parts to the San Jose team, and all of those players, except for Salinas, will not be coming back to the team until after the World Cup.

Winners: Former Philadelphia Players

8 of 10

While the Union were busy getting bashed by New England at home, three of the club's former players had stellar showings in Week 11.

New England keeper Brad Knighton made a game-changing save in the fourth minute on an Andrew Wenger shot that would end up shifting all the momentum to the Revolution.

At RFK Stadium, Justin Mapp and Jack McInerney teamed up for the Impact's only goal in the 1-1 draw with D.C. United.

McInerney has scored twice in league play since being traded for Wenger, who has just one goal in a Union shirt, on April 4.

Winners: Erick Torres' Teammates

9 of 10

In one of the more shocking developments in recent weeks, Chivas USA has found players not named Erick Torres who can score goals.

Two players have netted on three occasions over the past two weeks, which accounts for 75 percent of the club's total of four against Colorado and FC Dallas.

This week, Marky Delgado scored for the Goats, who managed to earn a point at Toyota Park.

Winner: Fanendo Adi

10 of 10

Fanendo Adi made his impact on the Portland Timbers attack within two minutes of his arrival on the Providence Park pitch.

The Nigerian forward, who joined the club on loan from FC Copenhagen earlier in the week, provided Gaston Fernandez with an assist on the 85th-minute equalizer that put the game at its final 3-3 result.

The 6'4" playmaker, who has played in Slovakia and Ukraine in his young career, is expected to add an extra spark to the Portland attack to go along with Maximiliano Urruti and Fernandez.
