Half-time analysis

The match started slowly, with United struggling to maintain possession in the early stages. The visitors' first clear chance came in the 29th minute, when Adnan Januzaj picked out Rafael with a fine cross to the back post. Rafael directed his header on target, but Ben Foster reacted quickly to push the ball onto the crossbar.

United went ahead in the 34th minute as Phil Jones headed in Robin van Persie's free kick.

West Brom's Victor Anichebe shot wide of the post late in the half. Moments later, goalkeeper Ben Foster appeared to handle the ball outside the box, but the referee waved play on.

De Gea: Had little to do in the first half.

Rafael: Came close to scoring with the header midway through the half. Perhaps should have done better with the chance. One of United's best attacking outlets in the first half.

Jones: Took his chance well. Largely untroubled defensively.

Smalling: Overall, comfortable in the middle of defence.

EvraAlong with Rafael provided most of United's width in the absence of true wingers.

Carrick: Typically efficient in possession, completing 90 percent of his passes.

Fellaini: Dangerous in the box on United's set pieces. Completed 89 percent of his passes.

Mata: Dispossessed three times in the first half. Tried four crosses, none of which were accurate.

Rooney: Completed two key passes, most in the side. Completed only two of seven crosses.

Januzaj: Booked for handling Mata's high pass into the box. Supplied the cross for Rafael's chance.

Van Persie: Played an excellent cross from a free kick to provide the goal.

Full-time analysis

Rooney doubled United's lead with a header in the 65th minute, and substitute Danny Welbeck made it 3-0 with a fine chip eight minutes from time.

De Gea: Not often called into action, De Gea did well to save Gera's close-range shot at his near post in the 78th minute.

Rafael: Played the cross for Rooney's goal, a nice curler from the right. Turned in a fine performance before being subbed out late in the match.

Jones: Made eight clearances in a strong overall outing

Smalling: Finished with 12 clearances, most in the team.

Evra: Made five clearances and four tackles.

Carrick: Completed 96 percent of his passes, the best percentage in United's team.

Fellaini: A strong presence throughout the match in the heart of United's midfield. Made four tackles, five interceptions and eight clearances while completing 90 percent of his passes. Could this be a performance that gives Fellaini the boost he needs?

Mata: Made a crucial clearance near the line from Anichebe's cross early in the half. United will be pleased with his performance today.

Rooney: His goal was served up on a platter, but Rooney did well to get into a fine position to score. Added an assist on Welbeck's goal.

Januzaj: Made way for Kagawa in the 76th minute.

Van Persie: Booked early in the half, was perhaps fortunate not to receive a second yellow card—and thus a red card—a few minutes later. Subbed out soon after, probably for his own good.

Welbeck: Replaced van Persie in the 63rd minute. Scored United's third goal with a lovely chip.

Kagawa: Replaced Januzaj for the final 15 minutes or so, contributed to the build-up to United's third goal.

Vidic: Replaced Rafael in the 87th minute.
