USA vs. Belize: Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info and Preview for Gold Cup Match
The United States men's soccer teams kicks off its CONCACAF Gold Cup quest in Portland, Ore., against Belize on Tuesday night.
The U.S. has made the final in four of the last five Gold Cups, losing to Mexico in the last finals. Coming into this year's tournament, the United States is again one of the favorites.
Four months ago or so, U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann looked like a marked man with the Americans struggling through their qualifiers and looking bad in high-profile friendlies.
Now he has the team turning a corner and looking the best of any CONCACAF squad in the tourney. Although Klinsmann has selected a "B" team, there is plenty of talent and players who will be looking to make a major impact.
Here's a preview for Tuesday's U.S. Gold Cup match.
When: Tuesday, July 9, 11 p.m. ET
Where: Jeld-Wen Field, Portland, Ore.
Watch: FOX Soccer
Live Stream: FOX Soccer 2Go
USA Player to Watch: Oguchi Onyewu
Can Oguchi Onyewu become a regular national team centre-back again? That's the question that will be answered in the Gold Cup.
Onyewu has been unable to have the same kind of impact on the U.S. national team he had before suffering a tendon injury in 2009. He appeared at the 2010 World Cup, but he is losing his place on this year's squad to the likes of Omar Gonzalez, Clarence Goodson, Matt Besler and Geoff Cameron.
The United States isn't in dire need of a centre-back. Should Onyewu make a good impression, though, he has a great chance to continue getting in the lineup as the U.S. goes through its World Cup qualifiers.
Onyewu is the most experienced defender Klinsmann has taken into the Gold Cup, so he's likely looking for the 31-year-old to put in some good performances.
Belize Player to Watch: Deon McCaulay
Deon McCaulay likely is Belize's best threat to get on the board. In terms of talent, Belize don't match up with the U.S. scorers, but all it takes is one quick break for him to sneak a goal.
In 21 appearances for Belize, McCaulay has scored 14 goals, with many of those coming against much weaker opponents than the United States, though. He's going to need to find a different gear in this match.
McCaulay has a lot to play for beyond his national team. This is a great situation in which the 25-year-old striker can put his talents on display. He could help earn himself a move away from the Belize first division.
Prediction
This is a match the United States should easily be able to win. It has more talent and is much more organized on the pitch.
When you throw in how good the Americans have looked over the last couple of months, you've got a team that should be among the finalists for this tournament.
The biggest question is how many goals will the U.S. score. If it can get on the board early, it will be able to take over the match and not let Belize get any sort of advantage.
With the way the tournament has gone so far, tough, do not count out Belize. There have been some major upsets in this tourney before, with the top teams under-performing. The U.S. must go into this match fully focused, otherwise it'll be the next victim.
Final: United States 2, Belize 0
