As the 2012-13 season draws to a close in many domestic campaigns around the world, we've reached the stage where trophies are doled out, awards are won and tension at times rises to almost unbearable levels.

For the footballer who is active on the social networking scene, there are a plethora of opportunities to converse with fans around the globe and let them know how the end-of-season chase for success is going.

Twitter, Facebook and the like are great for words and thoughts—but nothing shares a moment like a photo, which is what helps make Instagram such a success.

Here are the biggest stories of the week from the world of football in photo highlights.

We'll start in Spain and with Barcelona, where Lionel Messi (Instagram account: messicat) shared photos of his latest performance, away to Atletico Madrid. For once the Argentine didn't hit the back of the net in the game, and he also suffered a recurrence of his hamstring injury and had to leave the field early.

Teammate Cesc Fabregas (cescf4bregas) was instrumental in providing the assist for Alexis Sanchez's equalising goal, before Barcelona went on to claim a 2-1 victory. It was a great way to celebrate another La Liga title, which was confirmed the previous evening when Real Madrid only drew with Espanyol. Cesc showed how the celebrations quickly got underway and shared images from the trophy tour on the bus.

Over in France, another trophy was being shown off, and it was Paris Saint-Germain who clinched the Ligue 1 title for the first time since the 1990s, and defender Thiago Silva (thiagosilva_33) was there to share the moments of celebration with us.

In the English Premier League, Manchester United had already sealed their 20th league title triumph and were able to celebrate with the trophy after their final home game of the season, a match they fittingly won 2-1. Javier Hernandez (CH14_instagram) was on target and shared a snap of himself with the trophy and retiring legendary manager Alex Ferguson on the Old Trafford pitch.

Away from trophy celebrations for a moment and onto preparations to trying to win one; Cristiano Ronaldo (cristiano) has been sharing photos as his team, Real Madrid, prepare for their Copa del Rey final, which takes place on Friday evening against city rivals Atletico Madrid.

Finally, we complete our Instagram roundup of the week with Chelsea's dramatic UEFA Europa League victory over Benfica on Wednesday. Fernando Torres (fernandotorres_9) scored the opening goal of the game with a fine slaloming solo run, before celebrating in front of the fans.

An Oscar Cardozo penalty levelled matters, before Bransilav Ivanovic headed an injury-time winner to hand Chelsea their second European trophy win in two seasons. Juan Mata (juanmatagarcia) has been one of the stars of their season, and he proudly shows off the coveted trophy in the dressing room straight after the match.

A far cry from the regular in-season snaps of away-day travel accommodation, transport and sleeping teammates, photos from footballers around the game at this stage of the season offers fans a real insight into the glory and success that their talent and hard work can lead to at season's end.
