Video Highlights: Arsenal Players on International Duty

With a squad full of internationals, almost every Gunner was out representing their country of origin at the weekend and we can bring you highlights flagging up the individual displays.

Andrei Arshavin put on the Russian number 10 shirt as his side beat Azerbaijan 2-nil, and although the playmaker was not directly involved in either of the goals, Arshavin was a constant menace of the left hand side. Arguably the recent signing from Zenit should have scored, going close on two occasions.

Moving on, a comical piece of commentary associated Emmanuel Adebayor’s winning goal against Cameroon. Adebayor, who had been out for six weeks with a hamstring problem, took advantage of an 11th minute slip by defender Andre Bikey to settle the opening Group A game in the final round of African qualifiers. And in celebrating the goal the commentator took to spelling out the Togo strikers’ name as follows: “A-D-E-B-A-U-O-R.” The African Footballer of the Year went on to complete the 90 minutes in Accra but blotted his copybook by missing a second half penalty.

The largest grouping of Arsenal players was with France, with Les Bleus chalking up a narrow but important 1-nil win in Lithuania. William Gallas and Bakary Sagna played the full 90 minutes while Samir Nasri was reduced to a cameo performance, replacing Gourcuff with 12 minutes remaining. Gael Clichy never made it off the bench, which was just a little better than Abou Diaby, who didn’t make the matchday squad.

Lastly, we can bring you footage of Robin van Persie’s shift for Holland as the Oranje swept past Scotland with relative ease. Van Persie managed to get on the scoresheet grabbing the crucial second on the stroke of halftime with a header, which leaves a question-mark as to RVP often takes set-plays for the Gunners rather than being positioned in the mixer. Van Persie’s day was not all smiles however, the forward was forced off after 65 minutes for a mild concussion.
