Messi and Ronaldo Watch: Messi, Ronaldo Both Score Twice in La Liga Blowouts

Anything one superstar can do, the other can do the next day.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo had another impressive week in domestic action as both Barcelona and Real Madrid recorded victories in Spain's La Liga.

Barcelona won 5-0 at Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, one day before Real Madrid won 5-0 at Mallorca. Messi and Ronaldo each scored twice in victory.

Messi hits brace against Rayo

Messi scored twice as Barcelona thrashed Rayo Vallecano 5-0 on Saturday in La Liga action. David Villa opened the scoring in the 20th minute before Messi added Barca's second two minutes after halftime.

The score remained 2-0 until late in the second half. Xavi (78'), Cesc Fabregas (80') and Messi (89') completed the rout with three goals in the final 12 minutes.

Messi's two goals took his total for the calendar year 2012 to 73. With the victory, Barcelona remained on top of the table, tied with Atletico Madrid on 25 points (from 27 available).

Ronaldo responds with two against Mallorca

Not to be outdone, Ronaldo scored two goals of his own as Real Madrid demolished Mallorca 5-0 on Sunday. The Portuguese also assisted Gonzalo Higuain's second goal.

The Argentinian gave Real the lead in the eighth minute before Ronaldo made it 2-0 in the 20th. Higuain made it three in the 70th minute, three minutes before Ronaldo grabbed his second.

Jose Maria Callejon completed the scoring with Real's fifth in second-half stoppage time.

The win moved Real onto 17 points from nine matches. Jose Mourinho's men remain eight points behind leaders Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Midweek in the Champions League

Barcelona defeated Scottish champions Celtic 2-1 on Tuesday in UEFA Champions League Group G after a late goal from defender Jordi Alba.

Lionel Messi started and played the full 90 minutes but did not score. He was involved in Andres Iniesta's equalizer just before halftime.

Real Madrid lost 2-1 at Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday in a Group D match. Ronaldo equalized for Real in the 38th minute, but Marcel Schmelzer scored the winner for Dortmund in the 64th minute.

After the past week's matches, Barcelona top Group G with nine points. Real Madrid are second in Group D with six points.


Keeping track and looking ahead

Real Madrid visit Alcoyano on Wednesday for a Copa del Rey fourth-round match before hosting Real Zaragoza in La Liga on Saturday.

Ronaldo has scored 18 goals in all competitions this season, including 11 in La Liga.

Barcelona visit Alaves on Tuesday in the fourth round of the Copa del Rey before hosting Celta Vigo on Saturday in La Liga.

Messi has scored 17 goals in all competitions this season, including 13 in La Liga. He is currently the top scorer in Spain's top division.
