2011 NBA Free Agents: Baron Davis Expected to Sign with New York Knicks
Marc Stein and Dave McMenamin of ESPN are reporting hearing from sources close to the situation that Baron Davis has committed to sign with the New York Knicks.
Stein and McMenamin add that this deal could be completed by Sunday.
The former all-star point guard became available after he was released by the Cleveland Cavaliers via the amnesty clause.
Davis then cleared waivers, which left him free to sign with any team.
If this signing does transpire, the Knicks will be without the point guard's services for eight to ten weeks.
Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports reported that Davis' agent told Yahoo! that Davis has a herniated disc in his back injury, and would be out for the aforementioned period of time.
Davis was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers midway through last season. He played 15 games for the Cavs and averaged 13.9 points, 2.4 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game for Cleveland.
This will be Davis 13th season. The well traveled baller has had previous stints with the Bobcats, Warriors, Hornets, Clippers and Cavs.
Big Apple Impact
The Knicks found themselves in need of point guard depth after waiving Chauncey Billups under the amnesty clause.
Davis would join Mike Bibby and Toney Douglas as New York's three headed point guard duo.
This is an excellent signing for the Knicks. At this stage in his career, Davis is far from being an elite player. However, the Knicks are over the cap and had few options to upgrade the position. Bibby and Davis will combine to add some much needed experience and poise.
Davis and Bibby will help reduce the minutes that either is required to play which, in theory, will help leave them fresh and healthy for the playoffs.
