MLB Trade Rumors: Andrew Bailey and 10 Recently Targeted Players to Watch
With baseball's winter meetings quickly approaching, you have to think that many kinks in the free agency pipeline will be straightened out as players begin to sign with new teams.
As that dust begins to settle, teams will also have a better idea of who they'll need to target via trade to fill their holes.
Some names have been thrown around since before the season, but others are new to the equation.
Take Oakland A's reliever Andrew Bailey, for example. His name may have been thrown around as speculation weeks and months ago, but as recently as last week ESPN's Buster Olney noted that the chances of Bailey being traded are 100 percent.
Other emerging trade candidates may not have the same likelihood of making a move this offseason, but that doesn't mean you can ignore the possibility of them finding a new home before 2012 rolls around.
John Danks (SP), Chicago White Sox
1 of 10In one of multiple signs that the Chicago White Sox are entering full rebuilding mode, the team is said to be listening to offers from teams for both John Danks and Gavin Floyd.
Knowing that Mark Buehrle likely won't be back in a White Sox uniform, you'd have to think only one of those two will be dealt. Danks is the more likely option as some teams may look to a player of his caliber should they miss out on C.J. Wilson or other top free-agent talent.
Yonder Alonso (LF), Cincinnati Reds
2 of 10One team that's said to be in the mix for John Danks is the Cincinnati Reds, as the White Sox could potentially consider Yonder Alonso in return.
Given the possibility of the White Sox dealing Carlos Quentin, it would be interesting to see if that move would impact the notion of bringing in Alonso, as he could fill an outfield role.
Carlos Marmol (RP), Chicago Cubs
3 of 10As part of the Chicago Cubs rebuilding effort this offseason, it wouldn't be surprising if they moved multiple players from their pitching staff—and Carlos Marmol would certainly have to be in that conversation.
While he has blown a number of saves in recent years, he's averaged over 100 strikeouts and 24 saves per season with an ERA just above 3.00.
The market appears to be saturated with relievers, meaning that he may not fetch top dollar, but he could still get good value in return.
Francisco Liriano (SP), Minnesota Twins
4 of 10Francisco Liriano's name has been thrown around in trade talks in Minnesota for years. But every time a potential suitor arises, they're seemingly turned away just as fast.
Coming off a rough 2011 season, there wasn't much thought that the Twins would consider moving Liriano since his price would likely be diminished.
However, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe has thrown Liriano's name out there as a potential fit for the Red Sox.
Part of me thinks the Twins will stand pat with Liriano, but a decent package in return may be enough for new general manager Terry Ryan to cut ties with the enigmatic pitcher who has failed to live up to expectations.
Huston Street (RP), Colorado Rockies
5 of 10With a number of relief options available on the free-agent market, it's still unclear exactly what the Colorado Rockies could get for Huston Street. But after things begin to take shape after the winter meetings, it's likely the Rockies will have a better idea.
Street would likely fit in with a team like the Minnesota Twins, who just lost Joe Nathan to the Texas Rangers. He could even fit in with those very Rangers or the Toronto Blue Jays, who could look to add more late-inning depth.
Randy Wells (SP), Chicago Cubs
6 of 10As a part of the Chicago Cubs efforts to rebuild the franchise for success under Theo Epstein, they're apparently making Randy Wells available to potential suitors.
He likely won't find a home until the free-agent market for starting pitching takes form, but the 29-year-old right-hander has shown enough (2009: 12-10, 3.05 ERA) to give teams faith he could be a back-end-of-the-rotation starter.
Jeremy Guthrie (SP), Baltimore Orioles
7 of 10Despite having tied his career-high in losses in 2011, 32-year-old Jeremy Guthrie still has some usefulness left in his arm.
The Los Angeles Angels and Baltimore Orioles have recently discussed the idea of making a move, and while the Angels have a very formidable rotation, he could be a back-end guy that would eat up good innings.
Aside from that, the possibility (albeit a long shot) that Dan Haren departs from the west coast could create a new void that the Angels would need to fill.
Carlos Quentin (RF), Chicago White Sox
8 of 10With much of the attention surrounding sluggers this offseason focusing on players like Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols, Carlos Quentin's name has taken a back seat.
His name has surfaced with an exact destination in mind, as the San Diego Padres appear to at least be considering filling their outfield void with Quentin.
Quentin had a breakout season in 2008 when he hit 36 home runs in 130 games and finished fifth in MVP voting. His average may have declined since then, but he's still averaged 24 home runs and 73 RBI in his past three seasons.
Sergio Santos (RP), Chicago White Sox
9 of 10It's really hard to tell exactly what position the Chicago White Sox are in right now.
But with the growing possibility of Mark Buehrle leaving town and other high-profile names seemingly on the trading block, a rebuilding effort may be in full swing by the time the calendar turns to 2012.
Despite having just signed a three-year extension with the White Sox, it appears that Sergio Santos' departure may be a part of this rebuilding process. A number of teams have apparently inquired regarding his services.
Andrew McCutchen (CF), Pittsburgh Pirates
10 of 10Andrew McCutchen is certainly emerging as one of the stars on the Pittsburgh Pirates as he continues to build on his 2009 rookie season.
Despite clearly being a player the Pirates would like to build a franchise on, they've also indicated that he's not untouchable from a trade perspective.
As ESPN Insider's Keith Law points out, however, the asking price for McCutchen might just be out of most teams' range.
