Cowboys vs. Eagles: Why Cowboys' Pitiful Loss Doesn't Destroy Season

Eric BallOct 31, 2011

Boy, that game stunk.

The Philadelphia Eagles manhandled the Dallas Cowboys in all three phases of the game in their 34-7 romp. The Cowboys were horrible and fans are furious.

But that doesn't mean the Cowboys are dead.

They have played one of the toughest schedules in the NFL to this point. The Jets, 49ers, Lions, Patriots and Eagles all have a great shot at making the playoffs.

Now the slate lights up considerably over the next few weeks.

A home game against the Seahawks should get them back to .500 at 4-4, with four winnable games against the Bills, Redskins, Dolphins and Cardinals to follow. If they go 3-1, that means Tony Romo and Co. will be sitting at 8-5, with two games left against division-leading New York.

The play of Romo is as inconsistent as Joe Flacco. One game he's toughing out a punctured lung to lead his team to a furious comeback against the 49ers, and the next he's throwing multiple interceptions off his back foot.

It's becoming clear that Romo is incapable of leading his team to a championship because of his tendency to turn over the ball far too often. He has 10 TDs and nine turnovers thus far—but remember it has been against some of the best pass defenses in the league.

The Cowboys defense had an off night, but let's not forget how the run defense was ranked No. 1 heading into Sunday night. One game doesn't destroy all of their success on that side of the ball. Clearly new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has lit a spark and has players giving it their all on every play. There is no quit in the defense.

The same could not be said for the defense last year.

The Cowboys still have one of the best receiving tandems in the league in Dez Bryant and Miles Austin. DeMarco Murray proved he's no one-week fluke, and can help take some of the pressure off Romo.

I'm not saying the Cowboys are capable of winning the Super Bowl, or even a playoff game. But the season is far from over for the Cowboys.

Expect them to bounce back in a big way against a hapless Seattle squad next week.
