Michael Beasley: Nasty Legal Battle Latest Chapter in Sad Career
The tale of basketball player Michael Beasley is one where it started out with such hope and potential, but since turning pro, has come crashing down.
Since he has turned pro, Beasley has had multiple run-ins with the law. He’s dealt with marijuana issues since entering the NBA, as he’s been in-and-out of rehab, but continues to have problems with the drug.
But the news coming out now is that Beasley had a relationship with a Maryland-based sports agent and youth basketball power, Bell Sports Incorporated.
In the suit, Beasley’s camp says, that Bell Sports Inc. President Joel Bell supplied Curtis Malone’s nationally recognized DC Assault summer basketball program and in return Malone felt obliged to steer Beasley to Bell for representation.
What’s scary about this suit, is that Malone has produced high recruited players to high profiled college basketball programs, like Beasley to Kansas State.
In recent years, multiple DC Assault players have played for big time programs, with very respected coaches, such as Georgetown’s John Thompson III and Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski.
This is not about the potential of illegal recruits to NCAA programs, which has been going on in the NCAA for quite sometime.
This is the sad case of Beasley being moved around in high school, six times in five years. But, throughout those moves, Beasley was still regarded as one of the best basketball players in the country, while being supported by this management team.
Then in college, Beasley dominated at Kansas State, scoring the third-most points and second-most points for a freshman in NCAA history. But he still had these hanger-ons with him.
Beasley only lasted one year at Kansas State, before moving onto the NBA Draft, where he was selected by Miami as the second-pick of the ’08 Draft. But while in the NBA, Beasley was on his own, without coaches that could pamper Beasley and against talent that was better than Beasley.
At Miami, Beasley was out partying it up on South Beach, and it led to Beasley being traded to Minnesota before the ’10 season.
But the redemption tale for Beasley may have started in Minnesota. Last year he had a good year, having a career year in minutes per game and points per game.
Once he rids himself of these lawsuits, police chargers and drug use, he will be able to live up to his potential as a great NBA player.
Beasley has a tattoo on his back that says "Super Cool Beas." You can find out more on my Twitter by following me: Follow @tjmcaloon
