NFL Trade Rumors: Bengals Won't Budge on Carson Palmer Before Trade Deadline

Eric BallOct 17, 2011

The last chance for NFL fans to see Carson Palmer in action this season will be determined in the next 24 hours.

Don’t expect anything to happen.

The Oakland Raiders need a new QB after Jason Campbell suffered a potential season ending injury to his shoulder on Sunday. At 4-2, they have playoff aspirations on their mind. Considering a former Pro Bowl QB is currently residing in the same state with lots of free time…it makes sense right?

Yahoo! Sports Jason Cole reported that the Raiders were pushing hard to get a deal done for Palmer, but his team source said a deal is very unlikely.

After sitting at home watching the Cincinnati Bengals get off to a surprising 4-2 start, one would think the team would be ready to trade him and move on with Andy Dalton. Clearly he’s the QB of the future and holding Palmer hostage is looking pettier by the day.

Yet, this is Bengals owner Mike Brown, the stingiest, most begrudging owner in the sport. He doesn’t cave to player demands and will turn down even the most generous offers to prove his point. In the spring of 2008 he rejected a bevy of picks including a first rounder from the Redskins to make sure Chad Ochocinco didn’t get a ticket out of town.

Brown feels that caving in would set a bad precedent and because of that he believes it’s worth making Palmer suffer.

The other big issue with making a deal with the Raiders is the lack of draft picks they have to work with in 2012. They’re already without picks in the second, third and fourth round.

Unless they can decide on a few players to involve in the trade (highly unlikely), then the Raiders have little to offer the Bengals.

Yet, in reality, it’s all on Brown.

The decision is completely up to him and I really believe he enjoys seeing Palmer squirm and reconsider the stance he took.

The whole ordeal has made both sides look pretty bad, but Brown has never cared about what the media thought of him.

It reminds me of the way he dealt with Boomer Esiason back in the early 1990s. Esiason asked for a trade, Brown said no and the former Pro Bowl QB had to begrudgingly play a full year before getting shipped to the Jets.

That’s how this will all play out.

Brown will eventually trade him before the 2012 draft in the offseason for a third round pick, once again not getting as much value as he could of.

Sorry, Oakland.
