WWE WrestleMania XX: Eddie Guerrero vs. Kurt Angle—Overrated or Underrated?

Justin WatryOct 16, 2011

Eddie Guerrero was the WWE Champion. Kurt Angle was the challenger.

Eddie Guerrero was the clear face. Angle was a newly turned heel.

Both men were great WWE superstars, and both men had a lot to live up to at WrestleMania XX on March 14, 2004. Being in Madison Square Garden is one thing, but to be in a WWE title match in one of the headlining matches at WrestleMania is a whole other level.

If anybody could put on a great match in New York City, it would be these two...right?

Well, let's take a look back at this match and examine it a little bit deeper:

1. This match was for the WWE title, and it clocked in at about 20 minutes.

2. It was third last match of the night (Taker/Kane, and the World title match came afterward).

3. Eddie won with a cheap roll-up in a clever finish, getting a pretty good crowd reaction.

I think those are the three main talking points when looking back at this match seven years later.

First, it was for the WWE title. Eddie had just won the belt a month prior from Brock Lesnar at No Way Out. He was riding high, as fans everywhere loved him. His first challenge? Kurt Angle.

Great! You know they can both "go" in the ring, and both told a great story leading up to the match. As for the match, it was a good match. Nothing amazing or special, but it did its job and went over 20 minutes. Nothing too upsetting there.

Second, it was the third match from the close of WrestleMania. I understand WWE's train of thought with PPV cards. Space the matches out, and never let the crowd completely die out. I agree with that, just as I was fine with Edge/Del Rio opening this year's 'Mania for the World title.

I get it. Sadly, this night was not one to mess with the card too much. This match really should have been placed after Undertaker vs. Kane.

As great as the return of the Deadman was, that match stunk up the place. Having Eddie and Angle follow that dud would have been much more entertaining. Just my opinion...

Make no mistake, the crowd loved the World title match event, but Eddie and Angle was all but "forgotten" about once Taker and Kane ended. It is a real shame too. These two put on a great effort.

Third, the ending was a little underwhelming. I have said it before, but I loved Eddie's "lie, cheat and steal" gimmick. It was something different for a face to constantly to. The fans loved his act, and it never seemed to get old.

With that being said, I really love clean finishes (especially at WrestleMania) for the top faces on PPV shows. If a heel cheats to win, fine. However, if the face overcomes all the odds and wins, I want it to be clean and make it mean even more.

Eddie tricking Angle with his boot, and rolling him up for a quick three-count was just not needed here. This is WrestleMania! I really did not like the end of the match. Sorry, but it just did nothing for me.

Adding everything up, I think this match is right in the middle. It is certainly not an all-time classic, but it also is not some overrated wrestling match.

If I couldn't pick "in the middle," and I had to pick overrated or underrated, I would lean toward overrated. How about you folks? Overrated or underrated? Let me know in the comment section below...
