Alistair Overeem May Quit MMA To Box Vitali Klitschko After Grand Prix

John HeinisMay 31, 2018

How long have fans been clamoring to see Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem to face elite competition on a regular basis?

Would “The Demolition Man” be able to hang with UFC powerhouses like Shane Carwin, Brock Lesnar, Junior Dos Santos and reigning UFC heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez?

Well, after “The Reem’s” recent interview with boxingnews.pl, there is a chance that we may never know the answer to that question.

Overeem, who is squaring off against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in the semifinals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix in September, spoke as if a boxing career was just as likely as a roster spot in the UFC in the near future.

"I might go to UFC or boxing," Overeem said in regards to what’s next for him after the Strikeforce Grand Prix.

"Definitely, [I'm seriously thinking about fighting Vitali Klitschko]. I think it matches my personality.”

Anyone who thinks Overeem is out of his mind to try and fight one of the best boxers in the world (in the ring), he explained his rational in pretty simple terms.

"I'm always looking for a challenge," he said. "That came about in fighting for K-1 and becoming K-1 champion, something nobody ever did before. It would be cool to go to boxing and beat the main guy there.”

The muscle-bound heavyweight fighter deserves credit for his tenacity, but is he really giving this decision the well thought out process it deserves?

Overeem thinks so, noting that a transition to boxing would be easy for someone with his skill set and connections in the fight business.

"If you give me a good preparation, good sparring partners, which I can arrange, I can fix that," he said. "With my background already in kickboxing, my K-1 background, I'm sure I can break some bones."

If Overeem ends up being a man of his word, this would be a blockbuster move for an MMA fighter who is currently on a 10-fight win streak and is widely considered a top five heavyweight in the sport right now.

Overeem vs. Vitali Klitschko in a boxing match: a silly proposition, or a dream fight that would be well worth watching?
