NFL: Why Every NFL Team Should Avoid Terrell Owens

Monte Faison IIJun 28, 2011

There is no doubt in my mind that Terrell Owens is a Hall of Famer. But after several incidents on and off the field, Owens playing days might be coming to a close.

Before you read the article, lets go ahead and state the obvious reasons why Terrell Owens should not get picked up by an NFL team in 2011.

1. Torn ACL—Owens secretly tore his ACL this off-season during the filming of his TV reality show. After torn ACL surgery, the player has a long rebuild process to get back to where he was physically. With the injury coming so late in the off-season, Owens won't be ready until possibly November of this upcoming season.

2. Bad Attitude—Owens has been known in the past to be one of the players to cause drama. Is anything else to say here? Everyone pretty much knows his dark past ruining locker rooms.

3. Dropped Catches—Owens is known for dropping catches year in and year out. Teams would like a consistent player who won't fail them in critical times.

4. Age—This is an obvious one, but when you hit a certain age, there is just no way a person should be able to keep up with players that are much younger than you. With Owens being 37 years old, those legs won't go like they used to, especially after a torn ACL.

Okay, now that we have the obvious reasons listed, this slideshow will provide specific reasons why teams should stay away from Terrell Owens.

Dallas Cowboys

1 of 32

Jerry Jones tried this already. While in Dallas, Owens put up a decent 3,587 yards catching, but he continued to have crucial drops that hurt the Cowboys' chances of improving a 9-7 record in 2008.

At one point during his tenure with the Cowboys, Owens led the NFL in drops for the entire season.

Look, I'm all for sensitivity at times, but the sobbing act during a press conference was absolutely terrible.

Philadelphia Eagles

2 of 32

The Eagles administration would be silly to bring in Terrell Owens. After already trying once years ago and ending it in a huge debacle with Donnovan McNabb, this is a no-no.

Andy Reid already has a handful in trying to manage DeSean Jackson's and Michael Vick's ego.

I gotta admit though, I do kinda like Jackson's backwards fall into the end zone vs. the Cowboys.

Washington Redskins

3 of 32

With Donovan McNabb returning this fall, it would not be wise to bring him in for wideout duties. During the 2010 season, T.O. tweeted about McNabb's performance, criticizing him right after signing a contract extension with the Redkins.

Owens' Twitter account read, "How do u justify a 78 million dollar contract w/this type of performance?"

Already having a bitter past in Philly, all hell would break loose trying to manage these personalities on and off the field in Washington.

Atlanta Falcons

I'm going to bend here a little.

Considering everyone mentioned in this slide is from the great state of Alabama (including me), I'm going to be a little biased as to why Owens would be a fit for Atlanta.

Bringing in Owens, an Alabama native, to help develop Julio Jones would be a great move. Jones and Owens currently are workout freaks, and Jones would be the perfect understudy to help Matt Ryan win an NFC championship.

The only problem is that Owens is going to have a hard time accepting his role as a back-up player.

Green Bay Packers

5 of 32

Mike McCarthy is a man of discipline and would not stand for Owens' shenanigans

Last season, Greg Jennings led the Packers with 1,265 yards on 76 catches for 12 touchdowns. Those numbers are pretty good considering how well Aaron Rodgers spreads the wealth around throwing the football.

Add in Jordy Nelson, Donald Driver and James Jones, and there isn't a need for a team disruption for the Super Bowl-winning Packers.

St. Louis Rams

6 of 32

Sure, Sam Bradford needs some more help, but not a 37-year-old reciever.

The St. Louis Rams currently have 13 wide recievers on the roster, including Missouri star Denario Alexander (6'5'', 220).

Add in the talents of undrafted free agent Austin Pettis (6'2'', 209), and you have a crowded recieving corps Bradford has at his disposal.

The Rams don't need him, nor do I personally want to see a former OU player get put in that type of position.

San Francisco 49ers

7 of 32

The Bay Area franchise was once consider the "Tiffany's" of the NFL. From Joe Montana to Steve Young, the 49ers have a strong history of producing great quaterback play.

As of now?

They can't even find a quarterback who can throw the football.

This definitely wouldn't work. I can hear Terrell Owens giving crazy sound bites criticizing Alex Smith now.

New England Patriots

8 of 32

Tom Brady painfully just gave up another veteran reciever in Randy Moss last year. I can almost guarantee you he definitely does want not an aging, injury-prone Terrell Owens.

Tennnesee Titans

9 of 32

No way the Titans even attempt this one. The Titans organization is alreadying having a hard time trying to get rid of Vince Young and Randy Moss. They don't want another disruptive player inside the locker room.

Let's be honest, it would simply be too many brash personalities to manage for first-year head coach Mike Munchak.

New York Jets

10 of 32

Currently the New York Jets have several financial issues to fix with Braylon Edwards. Add in explosive reciever Santonio Holmes, and there isn't a need for a T.O. in Jet country.

Cincinnati Bengals

11 of 32

During the pre-season last year, everyone seemed excited about the new addition of Terrell Owens to the Bengal offense.

Since?

Terrible numbers and a huge disappointment and Carson Palmer is taking more heat for it.

Yes, this is an obvious one, but Owens has no chance to get back on the Bengals squad for 2011.

Carolina Panthers

12 of 32

Though a big reciever like Terrell Owens would make a difference, the Panthers will already have a hard time trying to get Cam Newton adjusted into the speed of an NFL offense. Adding a distraction such as Owens would only hurt the cause of the Panthers trying to reach the playoffs.

Besides, it's Steve Smith's team anyways. He wouldn't allow it.

Buffalo Bills

13 of 32

The Bills have tried this once before, remember?

After being released by the Dallas Cowboys in 2009, Owens had a quite productive year in Buffalo, catching 55 balls for 829 yards.

More impressively, we didn't hear a single peep come out that locker room. That's a first.

Even though Owens left Buffalo in good graces, the chances of this happening again are slim.

Miami Dolphins

14 of 32

With Bill Parcells on the administration in Miami, T.O. has no chance to make it on this squad.

Indianapolis Colts

15 of 32

Currently, the Colts have several players on the roster that can go and get the football. Adding an old, bad attitude, injury-prone, middle-aged man does not make sense.

Besides, Terrell Owens would have a huge issue with the learning curve of Peyton Manning's no-huddle offense.

If this pickup would happen, Owens would be on the bench by playoff time.

Kansas City Chiefs

16 of 32

With the addition of Jonathan Baldwin (6'4'', 228), dont expect for the Chiefs to add a one-year free agent wideout.

Oh yeah, lets not forget about Dwayne Bowe and his 1,162 yards last season too.

Chicago Bears

17 of 32

Lovie Smith, until last season, was on the verge of losing his job in Chicago. If he adds a team poison such as Terrell Owens, he will be back on the hot seat.

Besides, Smith already has his hands full dealing with the drama queen in Jay Cutler (begins to do a fake limp around the Bleacher Report website)

Cleveland Browns

18 of 32

Though the Browns finished a pitiful 29th in passing, there isn't much room for Terrell Owens at the reciever position for him to obtain decent numbers.

Though the Browns currently have former Stanford standout Evan Moore and Mohamed Massaquoi from UGA, you can't ignore the fact that Ben Watson and Peyton Hillis are getting most of the catches from Browns quarterbacks.

Look for Terrell Owens to stay out of Cleveland.

Pittsburgh Steelers

19 of 32

I can't see this happening here for several reasons.

1. Hines Ward is like the Energizer Battery. He keeps going and going and going. It's his team, and I doubt he would privately approve of bringing in a hampered Terrell Owens.

2. Mike Tomlin and the Rooney family won't put up with Terrell Owens mess and drama he brings to the table.

3. The Steelers just brought in a 6'7" reciever named Wes Lyons.

Six-foot-7?

Yeah, just throw the ball up to him, Ben.

San Diego Chargers

20 of 32

This type of offense wouldn't fit Terrell Owens.

Why?

The Chargers' top two leaders in receptions are players who don't play a wideout positon. Running back Darren Sproles in 2010 had 520 yards on 59 catches, and tight end Antonio Gates obtained 729 yards on 50 catches.

Besides, the Chargers don't need much help at the reciever position, finishing second in the league by averaging 282 yards per game.

Arizona Cardinals

21 of 32

No.

The Cardinals need a quarterback first. Derek Anderson is terrible and needs to be replaced immediately.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

22 of 32

Bringing in Terrell Owens to help Josh Freeman break the 'Black QB' stigma would cause more harm than good.

Why?

This is not the type of offense suited for Owens. The Bucs picked up not one, but two tight ends in this year's draft to open up seams for the young quarterback.

In addition, Mike Williams looks to improve on his 964 reception yards this season. I'm assuming he would turn his nose up to a production decrease for an aged wideout.

If the Bucs take a chance on Owens, he wouldn't see the field in multiple offensive sets.

Seattle Seahawks

23 of 32

Pete Carroll came into the NFL and made more roster changes than anyone has ever seen in one off-season.

Though finishing 19th in passing last season, don't expect any of these changes to include Terrell Owens.

The Seahawks recently acquired third-round pick Kris Dunham (6'5'', 209 pounds), and have former USC Trojan Mike Williams bringing in 751 yards of offense.

Add in Deon Butler, Justin Forsett and former Indianapolis Colt Brandon Stokley, and you honestly can't expect for Carroll to pick up a 37-year-old receiver.

Oakland Raiders

24 of 32

Al Davis and T.O.'s personality?

A disaster waiting to happen.

Denver Broncos

25 of 32

The Broncos finished seventh amongst passing statistics, and don't look to add any more drama to their once-prized franchise, led by NFL legend John Elway.

Only obtaining four wins in 2010, I don't see Owens makng that big of a difference to a growing quarterback in Tim Tebow.

Houston Texans

26 of 32

Though just winning six games last season, the Houston Texans are on the right track in terms of getting out of the dreaded expansion team doghouse. Picking up Terrell Owens would take them a step back emotionally in the lockerroom.

The Texans currently have a powerful running attack in Arian Foster, and Matt Schaub is developing into a decent quarterback, finishing fourth in the NFL last season in terms of passing yards.

Oh yeah, lets not forget about that beast they have at wideout named Andre Johnson...yeah, I think you guys have heard of him before.

New Orleans Saints

27 of 32

After building his own team, Drew Brees wouldn't allow it even if he could. You know it and I know it.

Besides, the Saints last season finished third in the NFL at 277.6 passing yards per game. In 2011, the Saints look to return their core nucleus of Marques Colston, Devery Henderson, Robert Meachem and Lance Moore.

With the depth chart locked that packed, Owens does not stand a chance at seeing the field with his age and ACL injury.

Baltimore Ravens

28 of 32

The Ravens don't really have too many big names in terms of reciever presence outside of Anquan Boldin. But that's expected when a team runs the football like the Ravens do.

The Ravens last season finished 14th in rushing, and their second-best reciever was Ray Rice, catching 63 balls for 556 yards.

Adding Terrell Owens would be a waste of time in an offense that utilizes the running back and tight end position.

New York Giants

29 of 32

Yeah, right.

Tom Coughlin can barely handle the personalities on his team. Several former and current players have come out stating that Coughlin needs to work on his people skils when it comes to dealing with players.

Terrell Owens stepping into the locker room would not be a fit whatsoever.

Detroit Lions

30 of 32

With Detroit only winning six games and Matthew Stafford staying hurt, there is no need for an old wide reciever with a one-year contract.

The Lions currently picked up former Boise State wideout Titus Young in the second round, and still have a beast in Calvin Johnson. Johnson last year obtained 1,120 yards on 77 receptions and 12 touchdowns. With Johnson's presence still in Detroit, there isn't much room for an X and Y reciever—the Lions are set for quite some time.

Don't look for the boys in blue to take a chance.

Jacksonville Jaguars

31 of 32

Though it seems logical to bring in a veteran wideout to help a young rookie QB get adjusted, the Jags would cause more harm than good with Blaine Gabbert's development.

The Jags don't have much size on the outside, but currently their tight end Marcedes Lewis (6'6'', 275 pounds) leads the way with 10 touchdowns. But as you make a deeper analysis, those types of numbers wouldn't fit Owens in the first place.

Even if they did acquire Owens, bringing in an arrogant player would rattle the young quarterback. If they do pick up a poison such as Owens, the Jags will be back to square one, winning six games per season.

Minnesota Vikings

32 of 32

(Looks around at everyone)

Would they really be stupid enough to try the veteran thing again after what happened with Randy Moss and Brett Favre?
