UFC 129 Fight Card: Will This Be Randy Couture's Farewell Fight?
UFC 129 will be a historic night for the sport of Mixed Martial Arts.
Yes, two titles will be up for grabs, and the UFC is expecting a record attendance. These rare occurrences alone makes the event extremely anticipated.
Throw in the possibility of witnessing UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture's final MMA bout, and you have one of the most must-see cards in MMA history.
After nearly 14 years of professional fighting, is it finally over for Couture? Will fans cease to hear his name roll off Bruce Buffer's tongue? Is this the final time "Captain America" puts on a pair of MMA gloves and steps into a UFC octagon?
The answers to all of those questions could hinge on the outcome of Saturday night.
At UFC 129, Couture is set to face former light heavyweight champion and one of the most elusive fighters in the sport, Lyoto Machida. Despite coming off back to back losses, most still consider Machida a top five light heavyweight. He is an enigma and one of the toughest style match-ups in the world.
Couture is a methodical fighter. He loves the mental part of fighting just as much as the physical. His ability to breakdown the techniques of world-class fighters and successfully exploit their weaknesses has led him to multiple world titles.
To Couture, Machida represents the ultimate puzzle. If he's able to solve the puzzle, it would make sense for the 47-year-old legend to finally hang up his gloves.
Win or lose, Couture has done everything that can possibly be done in the sport. Along with a plethora of UFC records, he's a UFC Hall of Famer and the first ever two-division UFC titleholder.
A win over a guy like Machida would be the proper swan song to a historic career.
Surely, other questions could arise depending on Couture's performance. If he defeats Machida handily, why not make another run at the UFC title?
All of this talk is circumstantial, but what about the favored outcome? What if Couture loses?
It's a known fact throughout the history of sports that legendary figures return in hopes of ascending to the top one more time before finally saying their goodbyes.
After nearly making it to another NFL Super Bowl, 41-year-old Brett Favre returned to the Minnesota Vikings this past football season for another run at a championship.
Basketball legend Michael Jordan continuously came in and out of retirement in search of another NBA title.
Technically, Couture is better than he's ever been. He is still a world-class wrestler and his boxing continues to improve.
Despite his increasing skills, Couture's ability to absorb punishment steadily decreases with age.
No human being can outrun Father Time, even though Couture has put up one hell of a fight.
Will this be Randy Couture's farewell fight?
There is only one man that can answer that question. All fans can do is enjoy the moment. There may not be another.
