NYC Mayor Mamdani to Make 1,000 'Affordable' US Open Tickets Available to Local Residents

Amid concerns over the soaring ticket prices for the US Open, local fans in New York City have a new solution.

Per The Athletic's Adam Crafton, New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani has secured 1,000 "affordable" tickets for the tournament to distribute to local residents on a first-come, first-served basis.

Crafton reported that Mamdani will announce that $100 tickets will be available for New York City residents to purchase for main-draw matches taking place between Aug. 30 and Sept. 8, running through the quarterfinal stage of the tournament. Tickets will become available on Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET, and buyers must have a certified NYC zip code to be eligible.

"This summer, we have shown again and again that sports belong to the people. From the World Cup to track and field championships, we have opened stadium doors to some of the biggest sporting events in the world so more New Yorkers can enjoy them," Mamdani said in a statement to Crafton. "Today, we are doubling down on that work by making the US Open more affordable for New Yorkers. If the world's best tennis players are coming to our city, New Yorkers should be able to see them play."

It was noted that these particular tickets will not be eligible for resale through Ticketmaster, the tournament's secondary market platform. Ticketmaster has been the source of the price surge, with "grounds passes going for between $240 and $478 as of Tuesday morning, despite the face-value price for the cheapest being $65."

The tickets available for local residents will include ground passes and seats in Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium. The U.S. Open mixed doubles competition will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, while the singles main draws will start on Sunday.
