New York Jets 2011 NFL Schedule: Predicting Every Regular Season Win and Loss
The 2011 NFL Schedule has been released and of course, as the crazed football fans we are, we already have to analyze every single week carefully and predict when and where our favorite teams will win and lose.
Some delusional fans, like myself, of course, would give every reason why a certain team has a chance every week to go undefeated. Yet as we know, it is extremely difficult to win every single game in the NFL.
This year especially, it does not look like any team will run the gauntlet as this appears to be the most brutal NFL schedule overall in recent memory.
Although we still do not know who will exactly fill out the Jets' roster, we do know that players are essentially lining up to play for charismatic head coach Rex Ryan.
Expect the Jets to shell out big money this offseason and woo the top free agents around to come to play for Gang Green. We've already heard rumors of cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha and wide receiver Randy Moss joining the team.
Even if the two apples of general manger Mike Tannenbaum's eyes do not come to the Big Apple, we know free agent cornerback Antonio Cromartie and wide receivers Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards would love another crack at a Championship run with this elite team.
I fully expect the Jets to have another star-studded roster capable of making it to a third straight AFC Championship game.
We know the Jets have a Championship run in them, and Ryan certainly believes it, but we still have to run down the 16-game schedule to see exactly which games the Jets will win or lose in the 2011 season.
The Overall Schedule
1 of 19
On a quick glance, it doesn't appear to be too difficult of a road to a third straight postseason. Of course, injuries could derail the journey, but let's not dwell on that scenario.
The Jets have two difficult stretches this season:
October opens as a brutal month with back-to-back road games against the Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots. They finish the month, and the first half of the season, at home against the Miami Dolphins and San Diego Chargers.
The Jets have a rocky road to the playoffs to finish the season, as the last quarter of the season pits them against the Kansas City Chiefs at home. They then travel to Philadelphia to battle the Eagles and fly back home to take on the New York Giants before finishing the season in Miami against the Dolphins.
Before we get started on analyzing every game to determine the Jets' win and loss record, here is the complete overall schedule—this is what we were all impatiently waiting for, after all!
Week 1 Dallas Cowboys Sun, Sep 11, 8:20 PM
Week 2 Jacksonville Jaguars Sun, Sep 18, 1:00 PM
Week 3 at Oakland Raiders Sun, Sep 25, 4:05 PM
Week 4 at Baltimore Ravens Sun, Oct 2, 8:20 PM
Week 5 at New England Patriots Sun, Oct 9, 4:15 PM
Week 6 Miami Dolphins Mon, Oct 17, 8:30 PM
Week 7 San Diego Chargers Sun, Oct 23, 1:00 PM
Week 8 BYE
Week 9 at Buffalo Bills Sun, Nov 6, 1:00 PM
Week 10 New England Patriots Sun, Nov 13, 8:20 PM
Week 11 at Denver Broncos Thu, Nov 17, 8:20 PM
Week 12 Buffalo Bills Sun, Nov 27, 1:00 PM

Week 17 at Miami Dolphins Sun, Jan 1, 1:00 PM
Week 1: Dallas Cowboys, Sunday September 11, 8:20 PM
2 of 19
Week 1 is always one of the most anticipated weeks of the NFL season as it sets the tone for the entire year. Of course, Sunday Night Football will be highly anticipated, but this year it will feel electric.
The Jets and Cowboys will be one of the best Week 1 matchups and it will be under the lights at night in primetime.
This is when we'll get to see familiar and new faces for Gang Green and the Cowboys inside the Silver Helmets.
This isn't just any opening game, though. This day will mark the 10th anniversary of the horrific terrorist attacks on New York City and the United States. As we remember those lost, this will be an especially emotional game, which will not be lost by the Jets.
The Jets will do everything in their power to will a victory for their fans and state of New York.
Verdict: Jets win, 28-21 (1-0)
Week 2: Jacksonville Jaguars, Sunday September 18, 1:00 PM
3 of 19
You know what to expect when Jack Del Rio's Jacksonville Jaguars meet up with the New York Jets—a tough-nosed, smash-mouth, hard-hitting affair.
Both teams pride themselves on great running, efficient passing and stout, gritty defense.
Unfortunately for the Jaguars, I full expect them to take a step back in 2011 after a surprisingly successful 2010 campaign. Mike Sims-Walker will most likely not be back in Jacksonville, and although he is an inconsistent receiver, he will be missed this year.
The passing attack will regress with Sims-Walker gone. David Garrard is a fine quarterback, but he will not be able to stand up against the Jets' fantastic secondary and improved pass rush.
Simply put, New York has far too much firepower on both sides of the ball for the Jaguars. The Jets' Super Bowl mission begins with a solid two wins to open the season.
Verdict: Jets win, 20-6 (2-0)
Week 3: At Oakland Raiders, Sunday September 25, 4:05 PM
4 of 19
The Oakland Raiders have fine pieces on both sides of the ball, most notably running back Darren McFadden and linebacker Rolando McClain. The Silver and Black are one of my favorite up-and-coming teams; I even predicted them to win the AFC West in 2010.
Still, it does not look promising for the Raiders to be much improved in 2011. The Jets have been known to struggle recently heading to the West Coast and were almost upset by the Denver Broncos on the road last year.
The Raiders are a similar team to the Jets. They want to run the football and have one of the most talented backs in the game to carry the load in McFadden.
It remains to be seen if superstar cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha will stay in Oakland or if we'll see him don the green and white, but should he stay in silver and black, we'll see the top two corners against one another.
This should actually be a close game, as long as Asomugha is a Raider, but not one the Jets will lose. They have the firepower to exploit the Raiders' defense.
The biggest reason the Jets will win is the lack of an aerial attack at the Black Hole. I do not trust Jason Campbell in this game with his supporting cast of receivers.
The only player who would scare the Jets is McFadden, but the Jets will always boast one of the top rush defenses under Rex Ryan.
Verdict: Jets win, 23-10 (3-0)
Week 4: At Baltimore Ravens, Sunday October 2, 8:20 PM
5 of 19
These two put on one of the best shows of the 2010 season when they kicked off the year on Monday Night Football.
They are back in primetime on Sunday Night Football to absolutely demolish each other under the lights in the center stage.
This will be a true grudge match, as these are two of the toughest teams in the league. They are loaded with experienced veterans who take pride in destroying their opponents. This will truly be one of the hardest-hitting games of the season and a low-scoring contest.
The Jets should have beat the Ravens at home last year, but I blame offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer's jaded play-calling for the loss.
This year, the Jets won't have to place blame on anybody, not because they won but because they were simply beaten fair and square.
This is an even match up and one we could very well see again in the AFC Championship, as I fully expect both teams to enter the playoffs once again.
Ray Lewis will rally his troops behind an electric crowd to pressure Mark Sanchez and the Jets. Joe Flacco is poised for a breakout season.
With the window shutting soon on Lewis' career, he will do everything in his power to will the Ravens to a Super Bowl Championship.
Verdict: Jets lose, 13-10 (3-1)
Week 5: At New England Patriots, Sunday October 9, 4:15 PM
6 of 19
It takes five weeks for one of the most heated rivalries in all of sports to take center stage. The highlight of Week 5 will pit the New England Patriots against the New York Jets.
The teams split the regular season last year, but the Jets won when it mattered most in the postseason at Foxboro. The Jets put on a fantastic performance and rode Santonio Holmes and Shonn Greene to victory.
Unfortunately for Gang Green, the Patriots catch them at the perfect time. New York will be on the road for the third straight season and will still have welts across their bodies from a brutal meeting with the Baltimore Ravens the week prior. This may be the most difficult back-to-back in the league this season.
Tom Brady will once again dissect the Jets at home like he did late last season to essentially capture the AFC East Division and AFC crowns. The Patriots had a great 2010 regular season. It's scary to think about if you're a Jets fan, but this will come true—the Patriots will be better in 2011.
The Patriots' entire team will be much improved in 2011 as the young players gain experience and Brady continues an all-time legendary career.
It is simply the wrong time for the Jets to travel to New England to battle the Patriots.
Verdict: Jets lose, 24-13 (3-2)
Week 6: Miami Dolphins, Monday October 17, 8:30 PM
7 of 19
Somehow, someway, the Miami Dolphins give the Jets fits.
Not this time.
Following two devastating road losses to two potential Super Bowl Champions in the Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots, the Jets finally fly back to their home town.
Not only will they be blessed with the comfort of their own beds and home cooking once again, they will have an extra day to rest and prepare for the talents hailing from South Beach.
Everybody will be talking leading up to the game about whether the Jets are true contenders for a Championship following their back-to-back losses.
This is bad news for Miami.
At home, in front of the nation with the lightest shining brightest on Monday Night Football, the Jets will put a beating on the Dolphins.
Darrelle Revis will shut down Brandon Marshall. David Harris will shut down whoever Miami deploys as running back. Shonn Greene will power his way to the end zone multiple times. Mark Sanchez will exploit the secondary.
Following this beat down, analysts will declare the Jets back in the title hunt and one of the most dangerous teams in the league as they click on all cylinders to dismantle and dissect the Dolphins.
Verdict: Jets win, 30-9 (4-2)
Week 7: San Diego Chargers, Sunday October 23, 1:00 PM
8 of 19
Is it just me, or do the Jets seem to own the San Diego Chargers?
Let's ask LaDainian Tomlinson about that. Trust me, this will be the most important game of the year for him. It's already circled on his calendar, I'm sure of that.
Tomlinson would love nothing more than to pull out a victory against his former team. I'm sure Rex Ryan knows this and will give him every opportunity to do so.
After Shonn Greene carries the load to open the season, Ryan unleashes Tomlinson on the franchise he gave his heart and soul for.
Tomlinson "found his lost step last season" and will be on full display against the Chargers. He won't disappoint as he lights up the Bolts to continue the Jets' surge to the top.
Perhaps even worse for the Chargers than Tomlinson looking for redemption will be the fact that teams generally do not fare very well flying from the West Coast to the East Coast for a 1:00 PM game.
The Chargers were good statistically last season, among the best, but it did not translate to victories early on. The Chargers will be healthier, but the Jets have their number written on the palm of their hand.
Verdict: Jets win, 27-17 (5-2)
Week 8: BYE
9 of 19
The Jets open the season with an interesting slate of games for the first half of the year.
They battle three of the stronger middle of the pack AFC teams in the Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders and Miami Dolphins.
They also have to contend with three potential Super Bowl contenders in the Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots and San Diego Chargers.
Even the Dallas Cowboys are no cakewalk to open the season, as they are one of the most dangerous teams in the entire league when healthy.
Let's recap the first seven weeks of the season:
Week 1 Dallas Cowboys (Win, 1-0)
Week 2 Jacksonville Jaguars (Win, 2-0)
Week 3 at Oakland Raiders (Win, 3-0)
Week 4 at Baltimore Ravens (Loss, 3-1)
Week 5 at New England Patriots (Loss, 3-2)
Week 6 Miami Dolphins (Win, 4-2)
Week 7 San Diego Chargers (Win, 5-2)
The remaining schedule following the Week 8 Bye:
Week 9 at Buffalo Bills Sun, Nov 6, 1:00 PM
Week 10 New England Patriots Sun, Nov 13, 8:20 PM
Week 11 at Denver Broncos Thu, Nov 17, 8:20 PM
Week 12 Buffalo Bills Sun, Nov 27, 1:00 PM
Week 13 at Washington Redskins Sun, Dec 4, 1:00 PM
Week 14 Kansas City Chiefs Sun, Dec 11, 1:00 PM
Week 15 at Philadelphia Eagles Sun, Dec 18, 4:15 PM
Week 16 New York Giants Sat, Dec 24, 1:00 PM
Week 17 at Miami Dolphins Sun, Jan 1, 1:00 PM
Week 9: At Buffalo Bills, Sunday November 6, 1:00 PM
10 of 19
I like the direction the Bills are heading with Ryan Fitzpatrick, C.J. Spiller, Fred Jackson and Steve Johnson.
Yet the Jets absolutely destroyed the Bills last season and I do not expect things to change. The Jets put up 38 points in each of the two 2010 meetings. Buffalo scored a combined 21 points in those two contests.
Following the bye, Mark Sanchez and his offense will once again dominate a defense that simply cannot keep up just yet.
The Jets win an easy one as they come out focused for the start of the second half of the season. The team started to fall apart late last year and cannot afford to slip up with a championship in clear sight.
Verdict: Jets win, 34-14 (6-2)
Week 10: New England Patriots, Sunday November 13 , 8:20 PM
11 of 19
Oh yes, it's time once again for Rex Ryan's big mouth to meet Bill Belichick's hoodie!
Last year, the Jets met on prime time on ESPN Monday Night Football. This year, they meet on the grand stage of NBC Sunday Night Football.
It's still an honor to play on Sunday Night with all eyes focused on you to close out a great day of football. The Jets and Patriots never fail to entertain and this will, once again, be the most talked about matchup of the week.
Emotions will run high in New York after the Patriots took Game 1 in Week 5. The crowd will be electric and Belichick's Patriots will certainly have a lot of bulletin board material after Ryan guarantees a victory to the media.
At home, expect the Jets to come out blazing, ready to knock Brady on his backside, mess up his hair and maybe even knock out some teeth along the way.
Ryan will relentlessly blitz Brady and ride the running game to victory as they did in the two 2010 wins.
Just like 2010, the Jets split the regular season and will look to meet in the playoffs for the rubber match.
Verdict: Jets win, 21-17 (7-2)
Week 11: At Denver Broncos, Thursday November 17, 8:20 PM
12 of 19
This is the true definition of a trap game.
After a hard-fought win against the New England Patriots on Sunday Night Football, the Jets have to travel across the country to visit the Denver Broncos with just three days to rest and prepare for the game.
With these Thursday night games, I very rarely pick the road team to win.
Last year, the Broncos scared the Jets and gave them a run for their money, but the Jets managed to pull out the victory heading into the bye.
The Jets won't have a bye the following week, but they'll be looking forward to an extended rest period. Championship teams don't forfeit any games, but with the Broncos boasting a healthy Elvis Dumervil, they will be much improved in 2011.
It's a trap game for New York.
Verdict: Jets lose, 17-14 (7-3)
Week 12: Buffalo Bills, Sunday November 27, 1:00 PM
13 of 19
Following a trap game against Denver, the Jets have extra time to think about the disappointing loss. Once again, the Bills are a recipe to right the Jets' ship and will fuel their engine back to the skies of success.
The Bills, unfortunately, have to face the Jets following an extended period where New York gets to rest and prepare. This time, the Bills have to travel to New York City, where the Jets impede on Buffalo's desire to stampede.
The Bills once again prove to be unworthy opponents as New York takes out their aggression on their division rival in a statement game to prove to the world they are still contenders.
Verdict: Jets win, 28-7 (8-3)
Week 13: At Washington Redskins, Sunday December 4, 1:00 PM
14 of 19
Remember the days when the Jets and Redskins seemed to exchange players?
The Redskins will be towards the bottom of the entire league in 2011 and will prove to be an unworthy opponent for these New York Jets.
Whichever quarterback and running back duo line up for Washington will remember the day they played Rex Ryan's Jets. Mike Shanahan's Redskins will be over matched throughout the contest. The Redskins simply do not have the talent to keep up with the Jets.
There is not a single player on the Redskins' offense that will scare the Jets' defense. They will be completely shut down by Darrelle Revis, David Harris and Bart Scott.
The 'Skins have some fine pieces on defense, I'll give them that. Still, the Jets have too much firepower on offense. One exciting matchup to look out for will be tight end Dustin Keller working the middle of the field, presumably against Pro Bowl linebacker London Fletcher.
The Jets will wear out Washington's best defender with Keller and then run it down his mouth and the rest of his teammates with Shonn Greene, LaDainian Tomlinson and Joe McKnight.
Washington has two powerhouse hitters in Fletcher and safety LaRon Landry, so it would be awesome to see Rex Ryan deploy "The Terminator" Jon Conner on the two hard-hitting defenders to give them a taste of their own medicine.
Verdict: Jets win, 27-6 (9-3)
Week 14: Kansas City Chiefs, Sunday December 11, 1:00 PM
15 of 19
This will actually be one of the more difficult games of the regular season for the New York Jets. As I said last year when the playoff picture was beginning to take shape, the Kansas City Chiefs match up very well with the New York Jets.
Both teams play a similar style of football. They both want to rely on quality defense, efficient passing and great running. We know Thomas Jones will have it out for the Jets just like LaDainian Tomlinson did for the Chargers earlier in the season.
Dwayne Bowe emerged as a top receiver in the league last year, but he will have his hands full with Darrelle Revis. I have no doubts in my mind that Revis will shut down Kansas City's most talented receiver.
The key for the Jets, though, will be trying to shut down second-year all-purpose player Dexter McCluster and Pro Bowler Jamaal Charles.
As we saw in Week 1 last year against the Chargers, McCluster is a major threat on special teams. Do not think for one second that the new kickoff rule will alter his ability.
Charles is the key to it all. Shut him down and it will be much easier. Yet as we saw in the playoffs, it's nearly impossible to shut him down as he ran for almost 100 yards and a touchdown against the Ravens in the Wild Card game. He can shred the Jets' defense and take it to the house on any given touch.
This is one of the scariest contests of the season as the Chiefs are too evenly matched with the Jets. I will cautiously take the Jets at home despite the Chiefs' great defense and solid offense.
Do not be shocked to see the Jets "upset" at home against the Chiefs. You've been warned.
Verdict: Jets win, 17-14 (10-3)
Week 15: At Philadelphia Eagles, Sunday December 18, 4:15 PM
16 of 19
Speed kills and the Eagles boast the fastest offense in the league with Michael Vick, DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, LeSean McCoy and Brent Celek.
Wow.
That's a Pro Bowl offense right there!
The New York Giants, Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers laid the blueprint for stopping the dual-threat quarterback Vick, who displayed remarkable improvement in 2010.
Unfortunately for the Jets, they do not have the speedy pass rush needed to contain the likes of Vick and McCoy. Jackson could be shut down by Darrelle Revis, but Maclin should dominate the other side of the field.
The Jets will have no trouble putting up points on the Eagles' defense. The problem is stopping one of the highest-powered offenses this league has to offer. The Jets won't be able to do it and will only see Vick again if both teams make it to the Super Bowl.
Especially after a difficult battle with the Chiefs, the Jets fly to meet the soaring Eagles and run out of fuel.
Verdict: Jets lose, 28-24 (10-4)
Week 16: New York Giants, Saturday December 24, 1:00 PM
17 of 19
Finally!
The most important game of the year for any New York fan like myself.
Throw away your division and conference rivalries, this is the biggest game of the season! This is for the bragging rights of the great state of New York!
Every New Yorker will be on the edge of their seat for each and every play. This is for the headlines of every New York newspaper. The media hype is going to be off the charts heading into the Christmas Eve day game.
It's one of the greatest holiday season gifts any New York football fan can ask for.
Last year's preseason game turned into an awesome battle for the rights of the City. The Giants came out on top after falling behind early. Victor Cruz is still trying to live up that night.
The intensity of that preseason game will pale in comparison to this regular season game in the second-to-last week of the season when teams are fighting for playoff positioning.
Sorry, Jets fans, you can have your newspaper headlines, but the Giants still have the stranglehold on New York football.
Verdict: Jets lose, 24-21 (10-5)
Week 17: At Miami Dolphins, Sunday January 1, 1:00 PM
18 of 19
Uh oh, a New Year's Day game in South Beach, Miami? New York fans better hope the Jets keep the partying to a minimal with a playoff berth most likely on the line in the regular season finale following two losses to the NFC East
The Jets usually find a way to lose out or split with the Miami Dolphins. Something stupid always seems to happen, like Santonio Holmes dropping a roll right in the bread basket or Ted Ginn Jr. returning two punts for touchdowns.
This year, the Jets finish the season going 5-1 in the division and sweep the Miami Dolphins to finish the regular season.
The Jets regroup after tough battles with the Eagles and Giants. The Jets escape the poor New York weather and have a pleasant trip to the warmth of Miami.
New York heads into the postseason following a fantastic performance against the Dolphins where they click on both sides of the ball.
Miami is in store for a rough season. Although they are generally a gritty and resilient team that plays smart, winning football, the Jets shut down their rushing attack and limited aerial attack.
New York needs to enter the playoffs with confidence, and a convincing win over a usual thorn in their side is the way to do it.
Verdict: Jets win, 24-10 (11-5)
Recapping the Season
19 of 19
The Jets have another winning season to start the Rex Ryan era, but as usual, it has its ups-and-downs along the way. The brutal stretches of the Jets' schedule hold true as they have trouble with tough back-to-back games.
Still, the Jets rallied and never entered a potentially devastating losing streak. They were always able to regain their composure and quickly get back on the winning track.
Of course, the only thing that matters at the conclusion of the regular season is if the path continues to the road towards the Super Bowl.
Did the Jets do enough during the season to secure an opportunity to win the Super Bowl Championship?
Week 1 Dallas Cowboys (Win, 1-0)
Week 2 Jacksonville Jaguars (Win, 2-0)
Week 3 at Oakland Raiders (Win, 3-0)
Week 4 at Baltimore Ravens (Loss, 3-1)
Week 5 at New England Patriots (Loss, 3-2)
Week 6 Miami Dolphins (Win, 4-2)
Week 7 San Diego Chargers (Win, 5-2)
Week 8 BYE
Week 9 at Buffalo Bills (Win, 6-2)
Week 10 New England Patriots (Win, 7-2)
Week 11 at Denver Broncos (Loss, 7-3)
Week 12 Buffalo Bills (Win, 8-3)
Week 13 at Washington Redskins (Win, 9-3)
Week 14 Kansas City Chiefs (Win, 10-3)
Week 15 at Philadelphia Eagles (Loss, 10-4)
Week 16 New York Giants (Loss, 10-5)
Week 17 at Miami Dolphins (Win, 11-5)
Verdict: Third Consecutive Wild Card Berth
