UFC 129 Fight Card: Jose Aldo and 55 Fighters Who Can Finish

Tim McTiernanApr 23, 2011

UFC 129 is coming up this Saturday, and one of the best finishers in MMA will be fighting on the card. Jose Aldo will be taking on Mark Hominick in the co-main event of the evening. That one is sure to be a spectacular fight.

Although I'm pretty sure the 55,000 people in attendance aren't there just for Jose Aldo. Georges St-Pierre will be taking on Jake Shields, in one of the most anticipated title fights in recent memory.

Also on the card, you've got Vladimir Matyushenko taking on Jason Brilz, Randy Couture taking on Lyoto Machida, and Mark Bocek taking on Ben Henderson.

There's only one fight on the main card that is almost sure to end in a knockout, and that is the Aldo versus Hominick fight.

A knockout can nearly be guaranteed because Aldo is one of of the best finishers in MMA today. In addition to him, here are 54 more fighters who are great at finishing fights.

The date of Jones' next fight has yet to be announced, although the opponent has been confirmed, and it is his former training partner, Rashad Evans.

The trash talking has already started, and there's going to be a lot of emotion in this fight.

Of Velasquez's 9 wins, 8 have been finishes, and all 8 have been (T)KOs. His only decision win was over Cheick Kongo at UFC 99.

Velasquez was originally supposed to defend his title against Junior dos Santos at UFC 129, but the torn rotator cuff forced him out of it. Now when he comes back he will defend his title against the winner of the Brock Lesnar - Junior dos Santos fight.

Cain Velasquez is a wrecking machine. Anyone who stands in his way, stands to be knocked out.

Notable Finishes: Brock Lesnar, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria, Jake O'Brien, Ben Rothwell

Rua has 19 wins, and of those 19 wins, 17 are finishes. Of those 17 finishes, 16 are (T)KO's, and one is a submission. The lone submission was a kneebar over Kevin Randleman.

Rua is a black belt in BJJ, but he likes to stand and bang with his opponents.

In Rua's last fight, as mentioned above, he lost his title to Jon Jones.

Even with the loss, Rua is the epitome of a finisher. His next fight will be a rematch against Forrest Griffin at UFC 134: Rio.

Shane Carwin (12-1) is the former UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion. In Carwin's last fight at UFC 116, he was submitted in the second round by (at the time) Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar.

Carwin is an absolute animal. Of his 12 wins, all 12 are finishes. Of those 12 finishes, 7 are via (T)KO, 1 is submission to punches, and 4 are legitimate submissions.

In Carwin's last fight against Brock Lesnar, he nearly added another TKO win to his column, but Lesnar ended up surviving Carwin's initial barrage and scored a "come from behind" victory.

Carwin is 36 years old, and may not have much time left fighting, so look for him to want to make another title run as soon as possible.

His next fight will be against UFC rookie and world class grappler Jon Olav Einemo. It will be Einemo's first MMA fight in about 5 years.

Look for Carwin to add another name to his resume.

Roger Gracie (4-0) is a current Strikeforce light heavyweight.

Roger has won all 4 of his fights via submission, with none making it to the third round.

In his last fight, Roger submitted Trevor Prangley with a rear naked choke in the first round.

His next fight is set to be against Muhammed Lawal, and if Roger can get it to the ground, you can expect another submission to be added to his name.

Notable Finishes: Ron Waterman, Kevin Randleman, Trevor Prangley

Tim Kennedy

47 of 58

Tim Kennedy (13-3) is a current Strikeforce middleweight.

Kennedy has finished 12 of his opponents throughout his career. He has legitimately submitted 5, made two submit to punches, and he has (T)KO'd 5 more.

In his last fight, he defeated Melvin Manhoef via submission in the first round.

His next fight has yet to be announced, although look for him to want another shot at the title soon.

Notable Finishes: Melvin Manhoef, Trevor Prangley, Zak Cummings, Nick Thompson

Robbie Lawler

48 of 58

Robbie Lawler (18-7 [1 NC]) is the former EliteXC Middleweight Champion, and a current Strikeforce middleweight.

Lawler has finished 16 of his opponents, 15 via (T)KO, and 1 via submission.

In his last fight, he was submitted by Ronaldo Souza in the third round in a bout for the Strikeforce Middleweight Championship.

Perhaps a fight against Tim Kennedy is in the cards next.

Notable Finishes: Matt Lindland, Melvin Manhoef, Scott Smith, Murilo Rua, Frank Trigg, Joey Villaseñor, Falaniko Vitale (2x)

Ronaldo Souza

49 of 58

Ronaldo Souza (14-2 [1 NC]) is the current Strikeforce Middleweight Champion.

In Souza's career, he has finished 11 of his opponents, all of them by submission. 3 of them have been submission to strikes, and 8 have been legitimate submission.

In Souza's last fight, he submitted Robbie Lawler in the third round.

His next fight has yet to be announced, but it is scheduled to be at the July Strikeforce card.

Notable Finishes: Robbie Lawler, Matt Lindland, Ian Murphy

Melvin Manhoef

50 of 58

Melvin Manhoef (24-9-1) is a current Strikeforce middleweight.

Manhoef has (T)KO'd his opponent in 23 of his 24 wins. That's impressive.

In his last fight, he was on the receiving end of a rear naked choke from Tim Kennedy. Before that, he was on the losing end of a kimura from Tatsuya Mizuno.

Manhoef is very one dimensional. But he's really good at that one dimension.

Manhoef doesn't have his next fight scheduled, but you can assume he's going to look for the knockout.

Notable Finishes: Mark Hunt, Kazushi Sakuraba, Evangelista Santos

Paul Daley

51 of 58

Paul Daley (27-10-2) is a current Strikeforce welterweight.

Daley has finished his opponents 22 times in his career. 20 of those have been via (T)KO and 2 have been submission to strikes.

In Daley's last fight, he put on one of the most entertaining rounds of the year against Nick Diaz, where he got TKO'd with 3 seconds left in the round. It was the first time that Daley was stopped with strikes.

Daley's next fight has not been mentioned, and is probably up in the air with the UFC's acquisition of Strikeforce.

Notable Finishes: Yuya Shirai, Scott Smith, Daniel Acacio, Dustin Hazelett, Martin Kampmann, John Alessio, Duane Ludwig

Hector Lombard

52 of 58

Hector Lombard (28-2-1 [1 NC]) is the current Bellator Middleweight Champion.

Lombard has finished his opponents 21 times. He stopped 15 via (T)KO, 2 via submission due to punches, and 4 via legitimate submission.

In Lombard's last fight, he defended his Cage Fighting Championships Middleweight Championship by defeating Joe Doerkson via doctor stoppage in the first round.

Lombard's next fight will be a non-title bout against Falaniko Vitale at Bellator 44.

Notable Finishes: Joe Doerkson, Herbert Goodman, Jay Silva, Kalib Starnes, Brian Ebersole

Dan Hornbuckle

53 of 58

Dan Hornbuckle (22-4) is a current Bellator welterweight and former Bellator Welterweight Tournament Finalist.

Hornbuckle is a very well rounded fighter, as he has (T)KO'd his opponents 10 times, and submitted them 10 times.

In his last fight, he was eliminated from the Bellator welterweight tournament quarterfinal when Brent Weedman beat him via unanimous decision.

Hornbuckle does not have his next fight announced, but the Bellator welterweight division is very competitive, so I'm sure they'll find something for him.

Notable Finishes: Steve Carl, Nick Thompson, Akihiro Gono, Brent Weedman, Justin Wilcox

Matt Hughes

54 of 58

Matt Hughes (45-8) is the former UFC Welterweight Champion and a current UFC welterweight.

Matt Hughes was known as one of the most dominant champions in UFC history, and with good reason. Hughes has won 15 via (T)KO, 5 submissions to strikes, 1 submission to a slam and 14 via legitimate submission.

In Hughes' last fight, he was knocked out in 21 seconds by longtime rival, BJ Penn. He later hinted he was one step closer to retirement.

He does not have his next fight announced, but then again he may not have another fight.

Notable Finishes: Ricardo Almeida, Renzo Gracie, BJ Penn, Royce Gracie, Joe Riggs, Frank Trigg (2x), Georges St-Pierre, Carlos Newton (2x), Joe Doerkson

Chan Sung Jung

55 of 58

Chan Sung Jung (11-3) is a current UFC featherweight.

Jung has finished 9 out of his 11 victims. He has submitted 7 of them, and (T)KO'd 2 of them.

In Jung's last fight, he became the first man to execute a "twister" submission in UFC history, by submitting Leonard Garcia in the second round.

Jung doesn't have his next fight announced, but maybe he'll pull out another Eddie Bravo submission.

Notable Finishes: Leonard Garcia

Jeremy Horn

56 of 58

Jeremy Horn (87-20-5) is a current heavyweight journeyman.

Horn has been around the block and back again. He has finished 75 of his opponents. That's insane to think about. He has (T)KO'd 17 of them, and he has submitted 58 of them.

In his last fight, he submitted Lee McKibbin via guillotine choke in the first round.

His next fight is going to be against Thales Leites at the end of this month.

Notable Finishes: Sean Salmon, Jason Guida, Chael Sonnen (3x), David Loiseau, Forrest Griffin, Chuck Liddell

Dan Severn

57 of 58

Dan Severn (99-16-7) is a current journeyman heavyweight.

Severn has (T)KO'd 16 of his opponents and submitted 60 of them. Can you even fathom that? It's insane.

In his last fight, he won with a neck crank in the first round.

He currently has three fights scheduled, two in smaller promotions and a rubber match against Ken Shamrock in KOTC sometime in the fall. In addition, Severn is currently on a 10 fight winning streak.

Notable Finishes: Travis Fulton (2x), Marcus Silveria, Paul Buentello, Paul Varelans, Anthony Macias

Boy I can't believe I made it through that whole thing! Congrats if you did as well.

Did I forget anyone? Is there some fighter I've never heard of who belongs on this list? Let me know in the comments.

And as I've said before, every slideshow needs a little Brittney.
