Buffalo Bills: Some Streaks They Would Like to End

Dan Van WieOct 20, 2010

—In doing research on the Buffalo Bills vs Baltimore Ravens game this Sunday, I started wondering about some things that suggested that the Bills team is in the midst of quite a few unfavorable streaks. This slide show will address the ones that I am sure Bills fans would like to see come to an end sooner than later.

It also speaks volumes about how many more weapons are needed to be added to this roster. I hope that Buddy Nix had a productive scouting session.

On to the show.  Some of the streaks you are aware of, others may surprise you.

58 Games Since the Bills Have Thrown for 300 Yards in a Game (and Counting)

J.P. Losman, the mad bomber, twice topped the 300 yard mark in passing yardage in the 2006 season. He did it against the New York Jets and the Houston Texans. Apparently, the Texans pass defense has never recovered since.

58 games and counting, is the current streak of games it has been since Losman topped the 300 yard barrier. Ryan Fitzpatrick knows that it can be done, as he did it in his very first NFL game. Will Fitzpatrick be the one to break the streak, or will it be Brian Brohm, Levi Brown, or someone that hasn't been drafted yet by the Bills?

Only time will tell.

11 Games and Counting Since Bills Had a 100 Yards in Receptions Game

In Week 11 of the 2009 season, Terrell Owens went nuts, catching passes against the Jacksonville Jaguars for 197 yards. Since that game, no other Bills receiver has topped the century mark for receiving yards in a game.

The streak is currently at 11 games and counting. Who will break it: Lee Evans, Roscoe Parrish, Shawn Nelson, David Nelson, Steve Johnson, or C.J. Spiller?

11 Years and Counting: When Will the Bills Make the Playoffs

3 of 8

Ever since the Music City Miracle happened on January 8th, 2000, the Buffalo Bills have been on the outside looking in when it comes time to entering the second season.

This year, with the 0-5 start, appears to be one more year to add to the streak of not reaching the playoffs. The rebuilding effort is still underway, but it figures to at least be a couple more years before the Bills will have the necessary pieces to get back to playoff football.

But we are a patient bunch, right?

4 Games Giving Up at Least 30 Points

4 of 8

Four straight games the Buffalo Bills defense has allowed at least 30 points in a game. This had never happened before in the storied history of the Bills organization. It took a perfect storm of sorts to allow this bit of history to occur.

First the Bills had to search high and low all over the country until they found him; the defensive mastermind that would teach the Bills inside and out how to play the 3-4 defense like it has never been played before. You know him by name now, don't you? None other than George Edwards.

Then we had to thank our lucky stars that the NFL schedule maker would line up four juggernaut offensive powers to face us in the Green Bay Packers (34 points), New England Patriots (38 points), New York Jets (38 points) and the Jacksonville Jaguars (36 points). Without those two factors, this would not have been possible.

Okay, two of them are powerhouse offenses, and two of them not so much. But who's counting anyway?

5 Games and Counting Since the Secondary Intercepted a Pass

5 of 8

Quick trivia question for Bills fans? Who was the last member of the Bills secondary that picked off a pass? Take your time, you haven't seen one in some time, so I will wait for you...

The answer is Cary Harris, who picked off not just one, but two passes in week 17 of the 2009 season against the Indianapolis Colts. It wasn't just backup Curtis Painter that Harris picked on, it was Peyton Manning as well, as Harris nabbed one against both Colts quarterbacks.

This streak should end sooner than later, since the Bills led the AFC in interceptions last year. Well, they did until George Edwards took over...

5 Games and Counting Since the Bills Had a 100 Yard Game Rusher

In that same game, week 17 to close out the 2009 season, the Bills saw Fred Jackson explode for over 200 yards rushing that allowed him to eclipse the 1,000 yard mark for the season.

Here we are entering week seven, and the Bills have not yet topped the century mark in a single game. This despite having one of the most talented backfields in the NFL to begin the season with Marshawn Lynch, Fred Jackson and rookie C.J. Spiller.

Some may argue that the three backs limited the number of carries that any one back could receive to gain the 100 yards. True enough, but now that Marshawn Lynch is a Seahawk, how many more games will it take for a Bills running back to top 100 yards?

1 Game and Counting: Number of Home Blackouts in Buffalo

7 of 8

The Bills faithful stayed away in droves against Jacksonville in week five. That makes sense, since the Jaguars fans don't turn out to see them play either. The question is was the blackout a natural reaction to the Jaguars being involved, or is the first of many such events based on a team that can't seem to find a way to win a game?

Next up on the docket - The Detroit Lions on November 14th. We already know that the Bears game in Toronto will not be a sellout, but that doesn't officially count in the streak.

While the Lions are not a top draw, there is a chance the Steelers game could be, only because the drive up from Pittsburgh is close enough that there may be more terrible towels in the stands than Bills fans. Ralph should make sure that there are plenty of buses available in the metro Pittsburgh area, because the Steelers have a team that deserves full support.

Last but Not Least: Number of Games without a Win: 5 and Counting

Sorry Bills fans if this came across your computer and caused you any sort of depression. For me, I tried to mix in some humor, along with some sarcasm, to bring a little smile to go along with the misery.

It will be a tough task to go in to Baltimore and beat a strong Ravens team, but I will be there to cheer on the Bills this Sunday at the Bills Backers Club. If the streak goes to at least six games, then we have Kansas City (who we beat last year), Detroit, Cincinnati, and Cleveland coming up that may be the game that we notch that first "W". If not, we will be assured that we will have the first pick next year.

That is of course, unless Carolina matches us loss for loss, and then we lose the coin flip. Oh man, I don't even want to go there...

Keep the faith Bills fans. One of these streaks will end sooner or later. Out of curiosity, feel free to throw your comments in as to which streak you think will end first and why.
