Claudio Pizarro to Sign for Hull City?!

Barney CorkhillAug 10, 2008

Yes, before you ask, that is an incredibly rare picture of Claudio Pizarro celebrating a Chelsea goal!

Now, considered a Chelsea flop and a waste of money, Pizarro was once one of Europe's top strikers. Knowing this, I was incredibly surprised to hear that Hull City have opened talks with him. Now, I know Hull have been good in the transfer market this season, but a coup like this could be outstanding for them.

It hasn't really happened for him so far at Chelsea, but it's not as if he has been playing week in week out. Most of his appearances have been off the bench. Subsequently, his Chelsea stats aren't great. He has just two goals in 28 appearances for the Blues.

There is no doubting his quality, he showed it in the Bundesliga first with Werder Bremen and then with Bayern Munich, scoring 135 goals in 319 appearances.

And Jose Mourinho obviously saw something in Pizarro, otherwise he wouldn't have signed him. And now Phil Brown has seen something in him. He admits it will be an expensive option, but he is still pursuing it. It would cap off a fantastic transfer window for Hull.

But would the Peruvian want to move to the KC Stadium? Well, it depends if he wants to play football, or whether he wants the money. Unfortunately, more often than not nowadays, it's the latter.

We know that Hull won't be able to match the ridiculous wages being handed out by Roman Abramovich. In fact, they probably won't be able to afford the initial transfer fee. So, a move to Hull would mean Pizarro taking a substantial pay-cut.

But, it would also mean that he gets to play every week. And, a front line with him and Dean Windass would be interesting to say the least.

Chelsea could use getting rid of a striker, as they only play one up-front and they have Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka, and Andriy Shevchenko. So, Pizarro could be the one, and if he's willing to take a pay-cut, I say go for it Phil Brown, it may be the difference between staying up and going down.

Or, perhaps a year-long loan could be the best option for all parties involved.
