Week Ten College Football Thoughts
This year, the media just cannot get it right.
How could they believe in a year of so many upsets that Florida State had no chance of beating Boston College?
The potential upset was supposed to be LSU at Alabama, right media? Wrong!
Last weekend, Florida State came to Boston College after a win over Duke and losing two straight against Miami at home (a game that FSU dominated until the final few minutes) and at Wake Forest. The unranked Seminoles dominated the #2 Eagles from the first snap. You could see that the Seminoles were faster and more athletic than the Eagles from the getgo.
BC All American QB Matt Ryan was outplayed by FSU QB Drew Weatherford, who should have been rusty coming off the bench for suspended QB Xavier Lee. Drew Weatherford was very efficient on Saturday, going 29-45 for 354 yards with 2 TD's, and—most importantly—no inerceptions.
Weatherford worked the pocket like a champ, as he stepped into his throws and stepped up when he got rushed from the ends. He knew when to tuck it and run and when to throw it away. Overall, Weatherford played very well, and the Seminoles will need that same kind of effort in Blacksburg this week when they travel to #11 Virginia Tech.
Something is really bothering me though. After the Seminoles beat the #2 ranked Eagles in Boston, all the media (not naming any names) were talking about was the Navy/Notre Dame matchup. We are talking about a 5-4 Navy team beating a 1-8 Notre Dame team. If you want to talk about history, then im sure Beano Cook would loooove to talk (falling asleep).
But we are in the now, and Notre Dame is 1-8 and doesn't deserve to be talked about at all. I know Lou Holtz still has a lot of love for the Irish. But in reality, the Irish have a better basketball team these days.
Do you believe Ohio State is really the #1 team? They have played D-2 Youngstown St., Akron, A Washington team that is down this year with a 3-6 record, Northwestern (who lost to Duke at home), 1-9 Minnesota, A Purdue team that has lost to anyone with a winning record on their schedule, Kent State, 5-5 Michigan St. (who, might I add, OSU struggled against), a very mediocre Penn State team (btw, why are they ranked?), and Wisconsin, who lost to Illinois and a team that the mighty Citadel scored 31 against, in Madison.
Whew! After all that, they get to play the unranked Fighting Zook's at home, and then a Michigan team that lost to D-2 Appalacian State. Their combined opponents W/L record at this point is 47-50...enough said.
So lets see if this solution that they call the BCS is the solution to determining a champion. We have three undefeated teams left in college football: Ohio State, Kansas, and Hawaii. I've already talked about Ohio State and how they are all deserving to be dubbed the #1 team in the college football universe, so I'll focus on Kansas and Hawaii.
Kansas is beating up on everyone it seems. This isn't just a basketball school anymore. They are in the Big 12 and beating up on a combined opponent W/L record of 36-51 to this point. This is our #4 team in the BCS.
Hawaii is a good team. They have been killing everyone, haven't they? With a combined opponents W/L record of 19-56, I believe they are probably in their place at #16 behind a 6-3 Florida team.
Let's compare these teams to a few one loss teams like LSU and Oregon. LSU has a combined opponents W/L record of 50-34 to this point. One team on their schedule has a losing record, which is Tulane. A game that they have to play every year. They have beaten five ranked teams: Va. Tech, South Carolina, Florida, Auburn, and Alabama.
Do you really feel that Ohio State could go unblemished with the same schedule?
How about those Oregon Ducks! Changing their uniform every game and beating up Michigan in the ''Big House'' by the score of 39-7. They also beat two top ten schools at the time in USC and Arizona State. They have a combined opponents W/L record of 50-32. They are very deserving of their spot in the rankings.
With that said: do you feel right when a team with a soft schedule gets to play for a title and a team with a tough schedule does not? Does it make sense that a team would play for the right to play for a title when they haven't even proved that they belong at #1?
I believe you should be punished for having a soft schedule. If you get to play for a title and your schedule looks like Ohio State's then why would ANY TEAM schedule any tough non-conference teams in the future? There would be no point. Everyone would be scheduling the Youngtown States, Kent States, and Akrons, of the world if that still gave them a right to compete for a National Championship.
You will see a team like a Kansas, who schedules soft, non-conference teams and happens to not play Texas or Oklahoma that year and still have a chance to play for the title. You will see Ohio State, who schedules soft, non-conference teams, and their conference happens to be down the same year, go undefeated and have a chance to play for the title.
This is what you are going to see every year until we have a playoff to determine the true champion.
At least Kansas will be tested if they make it to the Big 12 Championship. I would have never thought I'd say that the Jayhawks have a harder road to the Championship than the Buckeyes...
